I have a YJ Wrangler with standard square headlamps. Is it possible to change to the better looking round lamps with a front grill/headlamp swop from another model ? Someone will have tryed this I'm shure.
-
someone stateside on pirate4x4 did this. your suppose to be able to swap the grill, fenders, and hood.
now...... if you have todo all or not im not sure.
-
You need the front end from a CJ7
-
Sounds a bit involved. I may have to be a square and not a round'un. What were Jeep thinking of.
-
i think it was all bolt on, if not it should be as simple as marking and drilling a couple new holes in the new grill and bolting up.
if it was me, find a decent priced one and have a go. the worse that happens is you have to ebay it.
if you want it - make it happen longman! just dont let me have a hand or itll never come back apart
-
Oi Longman . . . . real Jeeps 'ave square headlights and leaf springs
-
The Docs right
You need the front of a CJ7
They should go on without to much hassle.
There was a realy nice white one at Cheapfest last year, dont know who owns it. But it was well cool 8-[ 8-)
-
you can use tj grill also, but finding a cj is probably easier
-
Sorry Roland, I know that square is the new round, it's just that I'd like a nice roundy. I need to park up next to a CJ and get out the tape and have a look.
Havn't seen any Jeeps near me in Devon, I bet they are out there ?
-
On a serious note.
I don't think it is that easy, otherwise more people would have done it. Way back in the early 90's Howes Motors had a YJ with a "CJ face" called the Apache.
The only one I know belongs to Simon Redmond from the BucksJeepClub.
To the best of my knowledge you have to have a grill, hood and wings from a CJ7 in order to make a proper job.

not sure if this will help or if its even relevant but I did a round US to round UK light conversion don’t see why it shouldn't work with a bit of basic fab skill for a square to round (I do say this never having seen a square light grill up close
so stand ready to be told a list of why nots)

i think you will find that you can reuse ya yj wings and just fit a cj bonnet and grill i am sure that is rik jaques did if you trawl birtys i think it is in a write up
-
. . . . but if you keep the YJ wings, you will keep the ghaypods
-
same for the cj after 79
-
the dutch guys who used to go to Jeepfest all ran these CJ looking YJ's and there is a white one which comes to Cheapfest.
Search the net and you will find the info
-
havent been for the past few years but i remember those dutch guys, one had a white jeep with a nice v8 (IIRC), it went into the wood white and came out with a respray. All you could hear was they guy bouncing the engine off the limiter as he was plugging/ploughing his way through the mud
-
nice - thats my kind of driver!
-
 . . . . so be careful what you do to your Jeep
-
but I think it is wrong to make your CJ look like a YJ or your YJ look like a CJ.
Works for me, love um all 8-)
-
WOW, thanks for all the input. You all seem to have a mountain of knowledge.Got some catching up to do. I'll sit and ponder for a bit, then spring into action
-
To try to con a punter that yours is a CJ is wrong but to adopt adapt and improve or 'customize' is totally acceptable a YJ tub and body and CJ clip with Dana 60s and corvette power with 40's thats fine as long as we all know what it is.
I plead guilty here... I run a Dana 300 and a Klune and the speedo on the YJ is now redundant for $100 I got an early new CJ speedo and $14 for the cable now I have a working speedo in the YJ. But...... you can buy blank CJ dashs from Quadratrac.... so that is my next route a YJ with CJ dash for about $150 bucks. nice...
On a domestic front if you can find a rotting grill (clip) and Bonnet (hood)
and the log book for a 72 or earlier CJ5 then use it and re-register as a rebuid.... save giving money to Gordon the caretaker and Alistair Arsewipe.
Just a thought.

But, as Roland says, real Jeeps have square headlights and leaf springs. Why spoil it?

Instructions and pics on fitting a TJ hood and grill on a YJ, electric fan, etc

knew i would find it again once i stopped looking. you do need more then i thought you would, but i still think it would be worth it.
get the parts and bring her by, well sort her in a couple hours.

Thanks Doublej, ( A.K.A the finder) The American dude seems to have done a great job. It will make it a lot easyer to do now, thanks for that ! My plan is to garage the YJ Oct/Nov. and do a lift, springs, suspention etc. Then do the cosmatic work. I'm going to loose the bling, so the stainless will be on ebag in the spring.
I just need to find some local DEVON Jeep'ers coz the wife and kids can only take so much of me talking Jeeps AT them. They try there best .
