Following the near miss at the weekend I have been looking more into putting a winch on the front of the ZJ. I would appreciate your views and suggestions/recommendations for an appropriate unit.
I am going the electric route with plasma rope and it will be occasional use (hopefully). I would also like to keep the cost down as far as possible but not where reliability/spare part availability suffers.

WARN every time as far as I'm concerned - mines 20 odd years old now and the only thing wrong is the paint starting to come off the aluminium gearbox casing.
Get a low profile unit in the 6000lb to 8000lb range, a roller fairlead and a good snatch block to double up with and then you'll be hot to trot.
Bury the winch behind a decent bumper and make sure that all your winch points have a safety factor of 4 or greater on them.

Warn Warn Warn... Do not waist your money on anything else. A Warn costs more but it works every time and maint is nill.

Warns are good, but I'd recommend Superwinch.
Click ----> Goodwinch (http://http://www.dborc.co.uk/goodwinch/) and choose Superwinch Catalogue from the left hand menu.
If you were to buy, I'd use These guys (http://http://www.rebel4x4.co.uk/superwinchwinches.htm)
