just wanted some advice guys ! i have a jeep cherokee 3.7 ltd v6 today cos the roads were really wet and torrential rain, thought i would try out the 4 wheel drive , put the part time 4x4 on when i slowed down to turn into parking space in supermarket it literally just wouldnt go forward at all and virtually stopped ,then when i reversed it just juddered really bad ?
tried it in full time 4x4 exactly the same happened ? any ideas guys (excuse the lack of tech terms i am a woman lol !) thanks paula x

Possible lack of use of the 4wd system??
Try it again in a deserted gravel car park and when its in position do a few figures of 8 to loosen the mechanics
-
that could be a very good point we have had it 7 months i drive it mainly and have only used 4x4 on a couple of occasions !
i obviously should be using it on a more regular basis !
somebody mentioned "the diffs " if they go i will be knackered apparently is that anything to do with the 4x4 system ?
thanks for the reply will try that out

The diffs convert power via the prop shafts to the wheels
They shouldn't be the cause of this issue

I know it sounds stupid but were you driving in a straight line when you engaged the 4wd?,
-
It's stuck in part time 4wd. Select 2wd, find a slippery surface (the neighbours' wet lawn or gravel drive is ideal) and pull away hard a couple of times enough to spin the wheels. It should go bang and go back into 2WD. Then drive it nice and steady on a sraight road and select full time 4WD. THEN LEAVE IT THERE.
You should never use part time 4wd except in extreme slippery conditions, and 2wd is a waste of time when you have a full time system. If you must change modes, the jeep should be moving and in a straight line.

when i engaged the 4wd the vehicle was not moving ? is that wrong ?
will try that out mike thanks and post back ?
so what your effectively saying is ALWAYS drive in 4wd ?

Run it in Full Time 4WD all the time, if not whats th point of having it, it will make very minimal differnec to the fuel consumption, should wear you tyres more evenly and be a lot more stable especially in the wet
Only use Part Time when you really need it, deep mud, snow etc...
