Title: mega oil leak
Post by: cully on August 11, 2008, 09:41:41 PM
Hi guys -- sorry to be a pain but I need some tech advice .My 96 , 4L xj while driving tonite started to develop peculiar gearchanges , it seemed to be changing at the wrong times etc. (bearing in mind I mess about with bits of wood not vehicles) .I then noticed it was leaking slightly red coloured oil from the front of the engine , I don't know where from ,but I thought I could limp home the 3 miles slowly. Very soon the drive stopped and there was no power ,almost as though on a manual the clutch would have gone. When I stopped there was a big puddle of black oil under the front of the truck , just about where the radiator is. AA man reckoned the hydraulic hose had gone to the gearbox . ANY THOUGHTS PLEASE

either one of the two hoses has split that goes from the tranny to the rad or your front main seal has gone in the tranny leaking past the torque convertor and out off the bell housing ufortunatly unless you are very liucky you may now have burnt the tranny to the point that a` rebuild or replacement will be needed if you are lucky you may be able to refill with fluid trace the leak and fix that and all will be well but i think that may be wishfull thinking :-(

Yep, happened to me, but spotted the huge smoke trail I was leaving behind before it ran too low.

Jetwash under your jeep, Fill the tranny up, start it up and stick your head under the engine, expect to be an oily mess finding the leak. Hopefully just a pipe, could be unions or the cooler, worst case as bubba said
