Title: lift verses traction
Post by: Bubba on July 17, 2005, 11:08:20 AM
heres one for you  if you have traction do you need lift this is what a chap at work asked me so what do you lot think

In an ideal world, you want both!
Lift for clearance and traction to pull you through

Methinks you need lift as well that way you don't catch diffs n stuff on ruts n bumps

Traction is what it's all about... coz if you keep traction you keep moving... Lift is a means to keep traction as are Lockers, waffle boards etc.

Winches are for when you have lost traction :) (MMMmmmm Winches)

So I would say Traction is most important, and Lifts, longer travel etc are just how you keep traction.

Or, put it another way, would you put road tyres on a lifted rig and go offroading (okay, I would for a laugh, and in the dry maybe) So a lift without traction is completely useless. putting Simex's on a non lifted beast will get it far further in most cases. (If they'll fit) If it Bellies out, you have lost traction.

I think my antics on one section of wagtail last weekend are proof.........Chris has a lift & all-terrains, he got stuck.......I dont got a lift (yet) & muds a didnt get stuck......

Traction first, (decent tyres followed by some kind of diff locks) then lift to give clearence for bigger tyres, which in turn gives you your clearence under the axles (you can have a 10" lift but this won't help one bit in deep ruts if you're running little tyres). Mega lift and articulation are of more importance for rock crawling and the like than the relatively flat,  muddy 'wheelin we tend to do in the UK.

KD you are a mad dastard, see formula below;

successful obsatacle clearance the birty way

sufficient momentum = (sufficient traction x balls x lead foot) divided by luck = KD

In other words to clear obstacle = (decent tyres x reckless abandon x thrash the life out of your motor) divided by point it & hope for the best = KD

Pork pies, Jaffa cakes & Benson & Hedges are optional

Traction IMHO is more important than lift.If you hav`nt got traction, then it doesnt matter how high your vehicle sits, you just wont get through the terrain as you`ll just slip and slide probably on the spot, and just dig yourself in a bigger hole.A lift will only give you more clearance over the deeper ruts and bumps but its the traction that pulls you through 8)  8)

IMHO lift lets you fit bigger wheels which gives greater clearance and therefore attempt more extreme terrain.  Traction allows you get over and through terrain that your car physically will clear.

So it depends on what he wants to attempt as to how he sets his car up.

Surely they're one and the same?

......why do you fit a lift kit?........to fit bigger tyres so you have greater ground clearance and better articulation so you can keep more wheels on the ground and therefore maintain/increase traction.

and more agressive tyres?.......to increase traction!

You can't distinguish between the two.

KD's right; through the mud he had better traction than me cos' he's got muds and I've got ATs

Over the humps and axle twisters -he got stuck, and I maintained traction cos I've got better articulation and a better breakover angle.

chicken, egg, egg, chicken?????

My 2p:-

Muds
Discos
Skids
Lift
bigger muds
gearing / lockers

In that order.  It gives you the opportunity to get used to each change before going on to the next.  The lift, bigger muds, gearing and lockers would all happen in quick succession, or, given the money, at the same time.

Biggest bangs-for bucks was the first set of MT/Rs.

Still think people are missing the point. :?

The question was, if you have traction do you need a lift?

Well no, of course not, you already have traction.  but the same could be said of tyres, if you have traction, you don't need to change ya' tyres either!!!!
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on July 17, 2005, 08:59:27 PM

mmmm interesting one bubba, the traction is definatley the important one. but there are so many ways of improving just that e.g big lift = big tyres = reaching the bottom of the ruts. there is no substitute for tyre size in my opinion. lockers are great but if ya re hangin on yer difs ya aint goin nowhere, unless you got a winch of coarse. 8)

Post by: Bubba on July 18, 2005, 06:09:20 AM
mm i think most of the time folks go tyres lift lockers that way cus its cheaper if lockers were cheap as chips lockers would be the first chioce and the you have to as how much lift do you realy need i mean you would not evan need diconects
