I wonder if there is a stock supercharger thet can be bolted onto a 4l cherokee or would nitrous be better.
-
WARNING - Getting power hungry is an expensive business!
There are supercharger kits for the 4.0l but they don't fit on an XJ that well because of the low bonnet and general lack of space in the engine bay.
Nitrous can be fitted - just pick your kit and make sure it's fitted properly. Run too much and you can easily blow a con-rod - so I've read / heard.
Rebuild a 4.0l with the crank and rods from an AMC 4.2, bore the cylinders, fit new pistons, cam, lifters and valve springs and you get a 4.6 (ish) with about 250-280hp and well over 300ft/lb torque.
I've been working on the last idea and have most of the parts and the machine work done, I just ran out of time and permission from my other half a few months ago so it's been standing waiting to be built

A mate had a nice supercharged XJ, nice bit of kit, dunno what bhp it stuck out but hell it shifted, too much for the brakes tho.
I have a 4.7 stroker crank/pistons at home, waiting for a decent priced engine to put them in
-
When you see the bill from the engine machine shop it'll ruin the cost saving you made on the 'cheap' engine :P
-
After a cheap engine for the block & head. A mate has a machine shop who will do the rebore & decking for a slab of beer, can do the head work myself, then just bearings, seals and put back together.

Avenger superchargers bolt on kit for 4.0 Jeeps, around $4500.

dont bother with all that shit just go v8.
i will do it one day for sure.
-
Getting a V8 in an XJ is hard work and that Avenger supercharger would need a big hood bulge for it to fit under an XJ hood. However I have heard of a Lexus V8 swap that physically fits and mates to the Jeep auto box. It's just the wiring of the Lexus ECU and getting the dash to work that scares the crap out of me - but an all aluminium, modern 4.0 V8 with potential to tune to ridiculous power does sound good
-
supercharger in my mates XJ didn't need any mods to make it fit, must find out the make off him, is a very neat install
-
I'd be very interested
-
Just have both
Supercharger & nitrous
Road tyres ok just aim and launch
BUT
Make sure no one is going to get in your way
-
ive been debating these two, and with AWDC talking of starting a speed event (XTC), more power is always a need.
How much do the stroker kits run? they only seem to push the 4.0 to about 250hp. Alittle more would be nice, but I dont want over 300hp, thats the cracking limit for my axles.
-
I bought all my parts separately from Flatlander Racing and Summit Racing. Bubba helped by supplying a 4.2 engine and I got the machine work done at a local place that has a good reputation among some hot rodders I know.
I don't think big horsepower is that easy to get from a 4.0 but torque numbers seems to be good when rebuilt as a stroker, add a supercharger and the hp numbers would go up
-
I looked at superchargers a while back, but never took it any further than looking.
Have a look at these links:

i have a supercharger fitted to my wrangler - foooking shieeeet complete waste of money.
go V8 it's the best and cheaper option - as for stroker motor i have not seen a reliable one, i have driven many of these and don't see the point!
-
peter, i thought you would turn up sooner with your input
-
These look like a cheap and cheerful option from the US.

why spend more on pumping up a 4.0 and ending up with a marginaly better mongrel engine
than the cost of v8ting
-
. . . . . all you need is a fucking long extension cable
