Title: Gearbox
Post by: Anonymous on July 24, 2005, 06:03:38 PM
Alright fellas! 2nd 3rd and 4th gear are all notchy and grinding. Im told that there is a common problem with the 'Synchros' on these box's and that they need replacing! Since I have no idea what any of that means i figure I will see if I can find new gearbox!
So are ZJ boxes all the same? and will a cherokee box fit in a ZJ?
And if any of you lot trip over one on your travels let me know. :D

OwenDon't know much on slush boxes but you could try Charlton Auto recyclers in Duxford for a S/H one

Also think theres Coventry Transmissions been mentioned plus EDM in Bicester

As your computers been acting up did you ever get my pm ref polythene sheet to keep the goo out of your rad?

Have you checked your clutch housing is not full of crud? It could well be that your shaft is cruded up and it's preventing your thrust bearing fom moving all the way along, so your clutch is still half engaged whilst your trying to put it in gear. I would have thought it unusual for all the syncro's to play up at the same time, but then what do I know. Dr mike might have a better idea and would know whether an xj box will fit.

As well as the mud in clutch issue, (I've had some of that) the clutch hydraulics are none too reliable on Jeeps, and thirdly, the clips on the clutch fork which secure the release bearing can break, allowing the bearing to become unseated.
A diesel ZG(ZJ) will have an AX15 transmission, which should be the same as an XJ diesel or 4.0 YJ or TJ.

Well the clutch and bearing are only 2 weeks old and I assume that the clutch housing was checked before it was put on. And I tried cleaning out the housing with a jethose through the gap but it was just clean water that flowed back out.
