Whilst having a disconcerting noise investigated it looks like the front drive shafts need replacing.
I am told that the UJ's appear to be welded in place.
Lighthouse would appear to be my first port of call but can someone tell me what I need to order so I get it right.
Would this be right or do I need to ask for any extra widgets ? Dear Mr Lighthouse can I have 2 front drive shafts & matching UJ's for my TJ please ?
Cheers folks
Gaz, still got manflu

Have a look at my post here: http://www.birtydastardsjeepclub.com/fo ... php?t=8466 (http://www.birtydastardsjeepclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8466)
You probably won't need the pinion seal though!
The strap kit is not necessary, but advisable and the needle nozzle is for greasing the UJs
-
Welded? Don't think so.
They are held in by snap rings covered in rust and crud.
-
i read this as being axle shafts not prop shaft..?
If so Gaz its probably just the UJ's that need replacing no extra widgets..
If it is the shafts that are knackered and you can wait you could order some hardened ones from the states..

I've just re-read the original post!

Cheers gents.
Thanks for confirming no welding nonsense, I haven't seen the offending area myself but rust & crud combo sounds about right
I believe I may have a new pair of UJ's in the garage for the front drive shafts purchased from the Doc sometime ago for just such an eventuality.
If its alright with the technically minded, any chance you guys would take a look to see whats needed for us at the Turkey hunt.
If it needs shafts or bits n bobs I will have an idea of whats wanted.
You might be better able to cast an ear over the auto box squealing too for me.
Cheers
Gaz

who told you you need new shafts gaz
its sure to be the uj's
-
Hi Steve, I dropped it up to Mick at the Fox cause I couldn't figure out where the noise sometimes constant, sometimes intermitent squealing was comming from.
I asked him to check the brakes & UJ's & clean up / grease up stuff, thats when he said the UJ's could do with changing in the not too distant & he thought the shafts were worn but in fairness he did say to run it by those with a greater Jeep knowledge 1st

is it like a small bird trapped under the midle of the truck

axle uj's dont usually make a noise, you can check em by grabbing hold of both sides behind the hub and checking for any play.
Its more likely to be the double cardon joint on the front driveshaft. Its located at the transfer box end behind the skid plate.
You can either replace or get hold of a needle grease fitting and see if that makes it quiet
does it go quiet when wet

-
autos normaly dying can make harsh grating noises goaning noises clunks burping and or stink like they are on fire and or werring in a particular gear
but the first thing normaly is bad or constant shifting or skipping gears altogether or say putting it into reverse and it takes 30 seconds to take up drive

That's exactly what happened to mine. The squealing was more pronounced at low speeds and as good as disappeared when driving over 30MPH IIRC.
If it is this, then go back to my original thread in this post!
The job should take about ½ a day from start to finish providing you have a press or big old vice to hand.

But it doesn't seem to be constant

I dont think it was diagnosed as noise coming from the hub area but when these UJ's were checked there was an amount of play.

-
if i remember i will take the needle grease gun

Cheers Bubba, if I have got this right then, the application of said lubricant should keep the birdies quiet therefore diagnosing the problem 100%, thus leaving me to get a repeat prescription of Pete's shopping list from Lighthouse for a long term cure ?
Or have I just embarrassed myself again

so how did doctor death conclude the ujs were welded in
-
bubba, doctor death is barry the MOT man
Mick is the repair man
-
so how did doctor death conclude the ujs were welded in
probably caked in old grease etc and he couldn't be bothered to clean them off for inspection
-
the noise if our suspicions are correct is not realy from the ujs though they may be worn it is from the ball coupling of the constant velocity bit it dries and sqweaks like chirping bird it is greased on assembly and does not have a greaser on it but there is a rubber boot on the coupling that you can peel very slightly back and then get a needle fitting in to it and then grease it this normaly if cought in time saves a rebuild for quite a while ......we did this to the bishops tj though not sqweeking it had started to get stiff and notchy

This is the rubber boot Bubba is talking about

The new ones from lighthouse don’t have the rubber boot on them.

My ball coupling was doing this, needed to get it sorted and no time (or money) to wait for a new one.
Stripped it down, regreased around the roller bearings (making sure they all went back in) and repacked with grease - and it has done 10,000 miles since without any problem.
Cost = £0, time about 2 hours (which would have been same fitting new parts)
Probably all depends how far gone the rollers are though.
