Hi everyone!
I have just bought a Jeep GC 4.7 V8 Ltd, and have discovered a weird noise with it.....
When i turn around a left hand corner, there is a groaning noise, and a judder in the steering wheel...if I go dead dead slow, it doesn't happen, but any kind of normal speed it does. I'm planning to take it to my local garage next week, but thought someone on here may be able to give me an idea of what it might be (and how much it may cost to fix!!!)
thanks in advance!!

Does it have QuadraDrive?
-
Think you need to tell folk the year of the car to be more helpful, Mike is then your man
-
is it in 2wd or 4wd.
rear axle or transfer box issue ????
-
oops....idiot
It's a 2002
and its in 4wd
-
GC's are permy 4x4.
Is there a badge next to the gear lever that says Quadra-Drive?

if so do this test to see if the diff is playing up

wow - quite a test! thanks for your help....it is defo quadra drive, but i'm not sure i have the equipment to lift it off the ground ;-)
-
doctor mike is the man for the later stuff but i would think its a front cv joint at fault
-
Make sure the transfer case has Mopar NV247 oil and the front axle has 75/140 synthetic gear oil with Mopar friction modifier in them.
-
I would think first off do the front oil, bet they haven't put the friction modifier in at the last change
-
thanks so much for your help! I'll check the oil out, but i forgot to explain properly in the first place.....the noise comes from the back, but the judder I can feel on the wheel when its almost on full lock....
-
Change axle & tc fluids first then, could be the cheapest fix, otherwise it will be the clutch pack in the axle ot the diff in the TC
-
hello again
I took the Jeep in yesterday, and of course there was no noise when i took the mechanic out in it. Anyway, he put it up on the ramp to have a look underneath, and showed me that the rear passenger side, erm, arm thingy has a bit of play, and it could need a new bush.
(totally over my head as you may be able to tell!!)
Anyway, he said that he thought that it wouldnt' be so easy to just replace the bush, as sometimes the arms bend too easily, so i'm best off changing the arm as well.
Does this sound right? and if not, can anyone recommend a garage in the Slough/Uxbridge/Maidenhead area that may be able to help me?
many thanks in advance!

Pitsy,
My 2001 GC judders on full lock when doing under 5mph. This is caused by the abs system (I took it to a main dealer to ascertain the problem, apprently, the abs computer thinks that the outside wheel is slipping, so engages). If the judder is in the front end on full lock, I have been assured that it is normal.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like BS to me. The ABS does not operate unless you have your foot on the brake.
-
Which you do have in an auto when parking. I cannot parallel park at 10mph.
-
thanks for your help guys, but like I say it's not juddering that is a problem, it's the load creaking/groaning noise that is apparently attributed to this bush?!
-
the ABS should not work when you are turning to park the jeep even when riding on the brake.
what you could mistake this juddering for is:
when an auto is being driven slowly and the vehicle speed is slowed by the use of the brake and then the brake is applied enough to almost stop the jeep from moving forward what happens is the brakes grab the disks and the friction is then broken by the torque from the engine reuslting in a "graunching sound" and vibration through the brake pedal. This is not in any way the ABS cutting in, this "graunching" is perfectly normal and happens on every automatic car on the market. If a mechanic tells you it's the ABS working at this speed then ask for another mechanic who knows what the hell he's talking about.
brake graunch ( std term in automotive developement) cannot be cured or fixed, it is just something that happens with an automatic car. you can create the same symptoms on a manual but it is alot harder.
if you have a creaking suspension bush give it a good soaking with wd40 of a silicone spray and see if the creaking stops

If the worn bush needs replacing then get that done first. I would probably get a replacement arm from somewhere like Lighthouse Jeep, Mansfield 4x4 or another specialist supplier. The chances are they will be much cheaper than Jeep.
If the bushes are anything like those on a Cherokee you will save the money on labour costs as the original spec bushes are almost impossible to get out. Your mechanic will like you more for saving him the stress too
