Title: Which size carb?
Post by: ferretjuggler on January 03, 2009, 11:41:34 AM
I'm thinking about treating myself to a new Edelbrock 500 carb for the V8.
Any opinions V8 jeepers?

I spent about 4 hours yesterday (sad bastard) going through all the posts on the IFSJA forums relating to TBI and MPI systems for their V8s.
F.F.S!!! I'm still none the wiser, the conclusion I've come to is stick with a carb.

I've got one of those, off a 360 too,but it won't fit on my four barrel manifold.

If that's 500CFM, I would say it's a tad too big for a stock 360 unless you intend driving it flat out everywhere. a smaller one will give better torque at lower rpm.

All the Holley tuning books I have point at 390 to 450cfm for an engine of 350(ish) ci and a fairly low state of tune.
The 600cfm Holley I've got on now seems way too big.
American jeepers, however, simply won't have it.
670cfm Holley Truck Avenger on a bog stock 360 is typical.

I met a guy (over here) who ran a (std) Jeep 258 six with a 600cfm carb on it.

I like overkill but thats just plain silly

I've been searching the IFSJA forums on V8 carbs.
The more posts you read the more confused you get.
Consensus seems to be that the Edelbrock is a good on road carb, but crap off road even with the off road float kit.

there are many who swear by the holly 390 conversion for the 4.2 and i rekon the conversion has been available from 4wd  and others for gettin on for 30yrs

i ran a 500 cfm edelbrock on my 304 v8 and i had no problems i bought the jet needle and spring set wich gives around  8 options for the carb thats primarys aand secondarys

i now run a 600 on my 360 and did the same

You're certainly right there.
place all the jeepers in the world end to end and they still wont reach a conclusion.
I think I'll try 'n give the motorcraft a go soon.
