Minor problem today, noticed the rear shock was not attached to the axle
The shock mount to the axle is sheared off, not at the weld but approx half way up the bracket.
Where can i get a new mount to weld on to the axle ???
Its a 97 TJ
Will see if i can load a piccie
-
pics please
-
working on it

Not brilliant but you can see the idea
-
i would think it could be welded but a pic would help for sure
-
thats the shlepmobile
-
the bracket has gone at the mid point, could be plated i spose to give it strength
-
nah its the gailmobil
-
ahh looks more gay than normal
-
Is it just made out of sheet / plate steel ?
If so & you can get it off (both bits) for a pattern, so long as the bends are straight without any fancy joggles I might be able to get a replacement made up.
Oh & how thick is the material its made from ?
Let me know
-
RE does a kit - so does Clayton but his bracket relocates the mount....Have seen this before the mount hangs down like a whores draws begs to be knocked off!!!!
-
found the RE kit, looks the job

Been thinking today about relocating the shock mounts to the top of the axle tubes.
Only thing which concerned me was the heat build up welding. Pulling the halfshafts and draining all the oil is the solution I suppose?
-
Oil does not go to the top of the tube.....
-
But the oil does go down the tube. Welding with enough heat to be good penetration will be hot enough for it to catch i'd have thought?

One has much to learn young JEDI.

he he

-
Let me help you - locate a jack and lift the side you intend to weld.
Luke the above advice is free of charge......

You've never seen a truck go up in flames from welding have you?

just a guess, are you saying tube fills with oil=no oxygen=no fire and oil keeps heat away from seals?
-
yup i have
-
True....Had a TATima go bang does that count?
-
wow, unbelivable advice
I'll stick to draining oil from things which I'm welding personally
-
the oil wont light it has no air in there. there is no problem welding to the tubes as long as there is not to much penetration and in any case there is plenty of room between the shaft and the tube wall. as for your bracket Steve we can weld it easy enough and strengthen it if ya like.

8-)
Hell yes...
-
all fixed, bracket welded back and looking good
thanks to kev and gregg for your time and help
another couple of jobs done too
-
Result, Dead handy them pair aint they

its always a grand day out over at the ranch with the deadly duo
-
how much heat/weld do you really think you'd be putting into the axles to light the oil???
seriously your more likely to bend the axle the amout your talking.
ive welded alot of brackets to axles using low hidrogen rods (lots of penetration and heat) an never had a problem, or even considered dropping the oil.
i presume you'd be using a mig, so at most you'll only be warming the inside of the tubes, you'd never get anywhere near the flash point of the oil or melt the seals which will be atleast 6 inches away.
by the way the axle tubes are about half inch think.
