Title: Cherokee 4.0 95 - transmission problem?
Post by: johnboy on January 20, 2009, 02:26:24 PM
Pulling onto M5 sliproad this a.m. uphill left bend, gave it a footful - loud crack from front offside then tingle through steering and it doesn't sound right - not grating or anything jusr not as smooth as usual.  Tried stopping and selecting 2WD, lever went all the way to 2D but indicated "part time" wouldn't let me get into low but finally managed to get into 4WD, according to indicator.  Might be me being paranoid but it seems to have no engine breaking as well.  I can't bend or stoop so I need to know if anyone out there can let me know what it might be, and if they know of a place near Taunton I can get it fixed; the local agent is out of the question, they charged me £35 for a set of wipers and the rear one hasn't worked properly since.  Any comments will be much appreciated. John

Called Lighthouse and they warned me that the shaft might have gone as well; is this likely given it still drives quite well? Thanks for input so far.

On tight lock is there a thump thump thump thump sound which lightens up when you straighten the steering?

Get someone to bend down and look in the gap between the back of the hub and the axle, can they see anything loose?

Was told I had iffy shafts n UJ's on the TJ, replaced the UJ's & hubs (or rather Bubba & Gregg did) as both were past there sell by date, shafts were fine.

Similar set up on a cherry I think, will let the tech heads advise

it takes a lot to damage a shaft unless you are driving a lardie then they are made of glass....

Going to have a new UJ put on next week - checked over the old MOTs that came with it and found a warning on the offside UJ - so will go for it - let you know how it goes - thanks again.

Just an update - turned out to be bolts sheared on o/s engine mount - had the UJ changed anyway and all good now.  Thanks
