I read the user manual and I think I shifted wrong !! I should have put it in neutral then clicked across and into 4 lo !!

that's the proper way to go into 4lo.

high ratio's can be swapped when in drive but changing to a lo ratio involves a big swap in the speed of the gears hence the need to put the gear into neutral whilst stopped first.

as for damage try to change the ratios properly whilst travelling in a straight line and basically see and hear what happens. if it all works without any noise and smoothly then you should be ok.

the noise/geinding you heard might have been the ratios trying to mesh together

there is big long drive just off mine. It's about 300 meters long. Would it be okay to pop it into 4 lo and drive straight up about half way then change to 2 wheel for the rest and part time on the way back for 150 meters then back to 2 wheel and park up !!

it said don;t use the lows on tar in the manual, I don't want to damage it

Yep, to change the transfer case, always stick it in neutral on the gearbox. 4LO should only be driven on surfaces that have some 'give' such as gravel, snow, ice, mud. Something that will not grip the tyres and not allow them to spin at different rates.

Use 4WD Full Time and 2WD on the road.

only go from high to low when stationary. the grinding was due to speed difference of gears in the transfer case.

switching between high p/t & high f/t can be done on the move up to 50ish mph

it is possible to shift on the fly into low but you need to know the ratio difference between high & low and match revs according

had a little drive on some gravel today and tried the different ratios. All seems find and dandy. Whew
