Title: Locking wheel nuts!

Here goes..

Purchased a Grand Cherokee from a private seller, the tyres are border line and I need to replace. Funny thing is the wheels have locking wheel nuts and guess who hasn't got the key???

Yep, so tried original dealer, they are now a mini franchise and can't or won't help. Local Jeep dealers are talking about cutting the locking nut off, but this may damage the wheels, and Jeep UK have been no use what so ever.

Tried to find the key code, doesn't exist in the service details.

So anyone had the same problem, any suggestions??

You can use any old socket that's about 1mm smaller than the nut and hammer it on, then unscrew it.

19mm usualy does the trick or you can buy a removel socket that fits on an air ratchet  welcome to birtys by the way.

a socket which will just fit and a lump hammer, once the rotating barrel gets crushed they'll come off

yup tis true done many times and a vise  to drift out the taetered nut from the socket show it whoes boss and all will be well

impact socket rather than normal and definitely not a cheapo one. It's quite brutal but works.

Lost my key, must have left it on one of the security lugs and roared off.  Hammered an undersized impact socket on and off they came.

I have just made a locking nut key for a mates jeep as he sheared the 3 pins off, But before I got to him he went down the extraction route like the screwfix thread as above but what he did was lock is on to the rotating barrel and is pretty much stuffed now as its locked on and just rotates, so dont do that, His had 3, 5mm dia holes in the nut and I made a spare if yours is the same,

I don't really know how the tyre place got the first one of.... a 19mm socket seemed to do the job..... maybe it just crushed the outside revolving cylinder.

My alloys are fecked so can't see anyone wanting to pinch them.!!!

Thanks all for the feedback, however the tyres are fukled and need replacing so... i am opting for straight out, no fuss beating the feck out of the wheel nuts with a 19mm socket and see where that gets me.

More than likely end up worse but it's going to be fun finding out...
