Title: 99 XJ Seatbelt Question

I now have a small problem due to my my announcement on this thread:

I cannot get 3 baby seats in the back of the xj as the seatbelts clips are too long.

Is there a way to shorten them?

I would think being babies they are short enough......

jeeps are not the only vehicle to have this problem, most cars have the seatbelt anchorage too long. Hence most of the newer cars have specific baby seat anchors.
 When Owen was a baby i wasn't happy with the lack of restraint with the inertia seatbelts as a baby seat doesn't weigh enough to make them work. So i got another webbing strap and fixed the child seat into the car so at least you could lift the seat out with the inertia seatbelt fitted. This webbing wasn't to replace the seatbelt but to reduce the amount of movement from the child seat giving the inertia seatbelt slightly more time to lock in case of a forward accident. Even with the seatblet pretensioned and "locked" the seatbelt can relax with movement and release allowing the child seat to basically freely move around.
 One other option is to buy a classic seat belt where you have to manually adjust the belt to suit the need. This will be better for the seat and child but you wil have to remove some body trim panels to get at the reel fixing. This is not an option if you have active seat belts on newer vehicle

I've got Juliette's (my 2 year old's) seat nicely secured (I work in the Nursery industry so I am comfortable it is fitted adequately). Only problem is that because the rear passenger seatbelt stalk is to long I have had to fit it to the middle seatbelt stalk. This puts the seat a little more to the centre of the vehicle but it is rock solid - it is loose as a w$or$s $ann$ fitted to the correct stalk.

I need room for another 2 seats  

Can I disable the passenger side air bag !!

Maybe you could get some shorter anchor points from a scrap yard off a different car that are suitable to be fitted

the only other way I can think about it is if you replace the inertia belts with a set of new ( and I mean new I would not personally buy second had seatbelts from a scrap yard)static type seat belts, you can get them from  places such as europa car parts and a few motor factors have them.

I had a similar problem when I moved the anchor point for the front harnesses.

My solution was to change the end of the belt (I used clip on but you could re use the original fixed points) and acquired a pair of the adjustment plates from a local race/rally shop for about a tenner inc postage as a special order. Now belt can be shortened for my skinny son or reset to fat size for me

dont thinbk you can turn off the side airbags (only the front passenger is allowed). if pulling the airbag wire this will result in an airbag error showing

is that on the end where the belt clips in or the clip end ??

the bit you need is the black bit a few inches from the end which the belt passes though, this allowes you to adjust the effective length of the belt. the end bit (clip and eye bolt) are also available but you dont need them, just reuse original end.

thanks for the inspiration fellas. I decided to order a replacement set of seat belts from a breaker, cut the plastic covers off and then took them to a saddle maker who also stiches webbing - she shortened them and they are helluva strong (same as before if not more) and well stitched!!!

All I have to do this weekend is fit them. Should work well.
