Hi guys,
I've got a 96 cherokee and since collecting it last week I've noticed that the dash does not illuminate with the lights. Then last night I kept getting flashed by people behind me. I checked and on main lights I have no tail lights. Then the side lights wouldn't come on (they had worked before as far as I know). I played with the switch and found a possition between side lights and main beam in which the dash illuminates, the side lights come on and the tail lights work. Switch to main beams though and the tail lights and dash go out.
Is it a dodgy headlight switch? It looks like that's a part of the dash so is it a bugger to fit?
Anything else I should try?
Thanks,
Dunc

one problem that does happen is with the headlight switch. the pull knob can be rotated which is a dimmer switch for the instrument panel. turning it fully one way (can't remember) it will click to a stop and you then can't rotate it unless you click it back the other way. If this is done with the lights on it can cause the fuse for the rear tail lights to blow. the fuse box is directly under the dash below the light switch. I think it is a 15amp fuse but you will have to look for it and they are the small fuses which make it more fiddly.

Thanks Dave, I'll give that a try!

Alternatively there is a fuse in the footwell fuse box for rh and lh position lights (sidelight and tail lights). Also, it may be a dodgy headlight switch - you can buy a replacement from Lighthouse, a dealership or any of the usual other sources.

Thanks guys,
Fingers crossed it's a fuse as I started to take the dash off and don't fancy replacing the switch by the looks of it!
