Title: Cherokee TD
Post by: ferretjuggler on February 15, 2009, 12:07:56 PM
I'm gonna take a look at a cherry TD with (I think) the VM engine.
What should I be looking for as regards these engines, I know they got a rep for cracked heads, so I'll be looking for the cooling system pressuring up, bubbles in the cooling system, water in the oil, signs of "stop leak" having been added to the cooling system etc.

Anything else that I should be wary of?

People only normally sell VM's with problems - if running OK they keep them

have a look at the oil and check the quality, if it is new then be wary. Look to see if the oil filter has been changed as well. When the engines run they are great but when the fail its ££'s. The pushrods can be rattly and could be an indication of the hydraulic lifters showing wear. If the cooloant is nice and clean also be wary.

It's hard to give a definate diagnosis of a hidden failed engine but be prepared to walk away if unsure, a silly cheap TD does not mean a bargain.
