How do I tell if the difference between a rear wheel bearing worn or a rebuild required on a diff on a Grand Cherokee 4ltr 2000.
I have a whine which comes in at 60 ish and is only present under load, back of the throttle or go down hill all goes quite? so bets on which needs doing?

Jack it up one side at a time and check each rear wheel for play or tightness in the bearing.
-
thats diff based
-
If it's the diff does it continue to get noisy or go bang and how long ish before it goes bang?
-
You'll know it's a diff not a bearing a long long long time before it goes bang

My rear D35 has been howling and growling like a $20 whore for the last 15 months or so, its very slowly getting worse tho and is next on the list..
Have a read of... this (http://http://www.ringpinion.com/FAQ.aspx#31) .

Take it down to Quikfit and ask them to check it out.
When they have decided which side of the coin to go for, diff or bearings and while its still up in the air, whip out a long screwdriver, put the sharp end just inboard of the brake drum and put the handle to your ear then spin the wheel (dont forget to check both sides), if it goes grumble grumble graunch etc, shake your head sadly saying OOhh, AAhh, calamity, how am I going to afford that, better let me go think about it, and beat a hasty retreat.
Now, if it was the bearings, Lighthouse here we come, and if not, WELL - thats your decision, but if you get your first quote on an ARB at least the other options wont seem quite so painfull :!:
