1996 Grand Cherokee Ltd 4.0ltr LPG
ABS light on.
When switching ignition on the ABS light comes on and does not go out until switching off again. (No special reason I can give, it just came on one day and that was it)
As I understand it (from a previous post that Mike P answered) if it does not go out before you move off then this is a short or broken connection and maybe not a sensor fault.
I have checked all the sensors and I get the same resistance reading by disconnecting and reading across the wires which does not show a short to earth.
I have also replaced the control unit (in Passenger foot well) with a spare but the light is still on.
Checked all fuses and relays. (By swapping with others)
I am now at a loss what to check next.
The questions I have are:
1) If you find the fault, will the ABS control unit/light reset itself?
2) If not can you reset the unit with or without a scanner. (If so what type?)
3) How much info can the dealership give if they scan the system (I don’t need them to tell me its not working,)
Can anybody suggest other things I need to look at, all ideas gratefully received.
What normally goes wrong with the ABS.?

If the light stays on it could be the controller (which you have already changed) teh Hydraulic Control Unit (the bit with the pump in the engine bay) a wiring fault or a fuse. The light should go out if you fix the fault or erase the codes from the controller. If you get a dealer to scan it you should get a specific indication of where the fault lies.

Thanks for answers Mike, how do I erase the code from the unit to know if I have fixed the fault?
