Title: Torx bolts
Post by: Bishops Finger on March 07, 2009, 04:19:09 PM
Any sneaky Birty advice for unscrewing some at the base of a TJ Windscreen?

Some have got rounded whist trying to undo them..

What sizes are they so I can source replacements...

from memory they are torx T27, mine have been swapped out for stainless bolts that have normal allen socket heads.

i did have a few the same, rounded out, i used a metric allen socket, just over size, with a  1/4 drive and hammered it into the damaged torx socket.

Use a han impact wrench - a good hit normally frees it off

Just done the hinge frame bottom ones on the YJ to put mirror mount there. Have replaced with allen head variety
Torx turned ok but so did nut on other side ended up with roll cage removal windscreen down and dashboard loosening to get speakers out to get hand and wrench down there..... 4 hrs of toil to release 4 torx bolts and replace.
Windscreen ones not too bad had to take them out to replace screen so brutalising the bastard was not an issue still had to drill 2 out tho. Best done under cover and in the warm.........!

I posted a thread on the IFSJA forum (or was it the 4WD Hardware forum?) with exactly the same title.

First reply I got stated " the man who invented torx bolts should be killed!"

A bit reactionary, but I'm inclined to agree in principle.

I'm thinking about using normal hex head bolts with conical washers/spacers under 'em on my screen hinges.

my local stainless steel bolt shop (yes we do have them here) does countersunk imperial bolts with hex socket heads @ 40p each
