Tried to put my cherokee (4.0 1995) into full time 4wd and it only changed into part time. Now where-ever the lever is, the light remains on part time and the Jeep is defo in part time. I've tried the lever in 2wd/full time, then reversing, coasting and accelerating but no good. It seems stuck. Is there something I can hit with a big hammer to make it change? Worse case, is it easy to change the transfer box? Any Jeep mechanics in/around Cirencester? Thanks

Get the Jeep on a slippery surface like next door's freshly raked gravel drive, wet grass on a golf course, a bowling green frequented by ramblers etc, put the lever to 2WD, stick her in Drive and hive it some welly a couple of times so all the wheels spin and relieve the windup. When it goes bang it's in 2WD.

I vote is a vaccuum disconnect came loose.
-
Our XJs don't have vacuum disconnect.
-
uh, i know. lol.

There's a slippery farm track close to us so first thing in the morn i will give it a try. Thanks for the tip. My neighbour works for Dyson, could he help with a vacuum?

Slippery farm track. Check. Selector in 2wd. Check. Light showing Part Time. Check. Into drive. Check. Rev it up, brake hard. Check. It Worked, back in 2wd. Bugger i'm stuck on a slippery farm track. (Only kidding) Thanks for the tip, dare I try putting into full time again though?

Hi,
My 93 XJ was sluggish changing into and out of FWD and like you I tried stopping, starting, reversing etc. with varying success. I then had 4 new tyres fitted, the difference was amazing, it now shifts into and out of FWD straight away. As I discovered it is very important that all 4 tyres are the same size and same pressure. Hope this helps.

My Cherokee doesn't like coming out of 4wd either, it seems to get stuck in part time 4wd and doesn't like to let go of it. I put up a post in the tech section recently about this and got some good advice..
Have a look at it here: http://www.birtydastards.com/frm/index.php?topic=10954.0 (http://www.birtydastards.com/frm/index.php?topic=10954.0)
I've got a new set of tyres on order though, so I'll keep y'all up to date when they're fitted. I don't know if they'll make any difference or not, but new tyres are always good :greggmo:
-
You "make" your tyres the same size by varying the pressure in them.
Measure from the floor to the top of the rim on all tyres, adjust tyre pressures until the measurements are the same.

When I'm in 4wd (and 2wd to a point), there seems to be a lot of noise from the transfer case. How long do the chain's last before they stretch and rub on the casing? My XJ has done about 155k..
Do I need to get a new chain from the main stealer? How much hard earned cash are we talking about? So many questions, but I know you guys all love to share your knowledge!
Would it be worth a trip to rednexx to get it sorted?

First, have you replaced the fluid in the transfer case recently? If not, try that, it's a
pretty easy job. If it's still noisy, then a used t/c would be cheaper than messing about
with the chain.
-
I'm guessing it'd cost a couple hundred quid to have a used t-case fitted.. I'll do the fluid and see what happens, but I'm not optomistic. There's a great video on youtube that shows just how much a chain can stretch and how it rubs on the casing. I'm pretty sure this is what's happening with mine.
So where do I go for a another t-case? Anywhere in the North-West of England or North Wales would do the trick. It's not a job I'm confident to do myself.
I really appreciate all the advice that flows from this forum, it's a proper gold mine..
