Title: Adjusting the steering stops on a TJ
Post by: PtP on March 12, 2009, 11:49:55 AM
I know some of you will have seen this before, but I thought I’d post it here before it gets lost when I pull the JA site.

This has to be one of the easiest jobs to go on a Jeep!

All you need is a 9/16 ring spanner, you might get away with a 14mm one, but it will be a very tight fit and some regular 10 mm washers.

The bolt has a nut welded to it so get your ring spanner on the nut and not the bolt head and just undo it! Place the necessary amount of washers behind the nut and replace the nut and bolt assembly and then check the tyres for catching on full-lock. You might have to add or remove the washers, but just use your best judgement. I think I use 3 washers on either side.

Here are some photos which shows the job.

Here you can see the washers behind the nut on mine

these are just std bolts so the lock nut can sieze in place and round off if not careful. Another option is to re-tap to a larger metric size bolt and fit a caphead bolt or a stailess type, stainless might be the better option.

addition

This is the same proceedure for and XJ as well

I wasn't aware there were any imperial bolts on the YJ did the throw in a mix  or have I just got lucky so far finding metric sockets that fit ?
