I discovered a shocking thing while working on the UJ. The thread in the wheel hub where the top brake caliper bolt goes in is destroyed.
Does a brake upgrade to cope with 35" tyres replace the wheel hub or does it use the same one? If it does then it'll be my #1 thing to do. If not then I guess I need a new wheel hub.
EDIT: did some searching and Vanco brake kit came up as recommended. It does come with the wheel hubs (or whatever they are called). Is that the best brake upgrade and is there a supplier in UK? Need to get it ASAP, not gonna risk driving my Jeep like that.

You have to tell me more guys, I'm not used to buying car parts never mind getting them from US.
How does it normally work? I mean the shipping part, are they used to shipping to UK and know all about it or will I have to arrange that? And what shipping costs for heavy stuff like a brakes kit should I be expecting?

When you order from the US, ask the price of the goods, the shipping price, and the total.
They may need to get back to you with a shipping price. You may be given a choice of shipping
prices depending on how quick you want it. Once you have the total, give them your credit card
number, billing and shipping addresses (which may need to be the same - depends on how anal
the company is). Wait a while and a UPS, fedex, DHL, Parcel Force or the postman will deliver
your goods.

OK, let me have you pause for thought here!
As I understand it, you haven't driven offroad before, but plan on going straight to 35 inch tyres.
Two things. First, get some experience driving offroad before you drive on 35s, you'll kill yourself.
Second, it's gonna cost a whole chunk of change.
Brakes 700
Wheels 200
Tyres 1000
re-gear 1000
SYE 200
Super 35 with detroit locker 900
4" lift kit 400
steering stabiliser 40
etc etc
Also bear in mind that such a machine is unsuitable for green laning, as it will destroy everything it
drives on, aside from being too wide and tall for many lanes.

I'm going for the looks here guys, to me it's just a toy... I know what I want (more or less) and hopefully it's gonna get there one thing at a time, in a year or two.

he refers to the learning curve that goes with driving offroad for the first time and how each time you get better at it
and in a perfect world ya truck should grow in capability in stages as you yourself gain ever more offroad craft and skill
tim is sorta taking the wary stance that you could build a absalute monster or buy one of the shelf and go out and at the very least scare the life out of yourself or at worst injure yaself or some other person

As you alter a trucks components be it for offroading or posing,you alter the way it handles and drives,and sometimes even the most experienced people can have unforeseen problems....just take a look at the pics on Bubbas postings.Theres a very experienced jeeper,yet ended up on his roof,whilst normal driving because of the actions of some other idiot driver.If you build up in stages,you get to learn how it affects your truck and the way it drives and handles and your driving style is adapted to suit.Go straight to 35`s and you momentarily forget because you expected the truck to handle as before,on a tight corner say,and your in big trouble.

Definitely little at a time.
My ZJ is +4.5" and the difference from the 2" lift it had before is HUGE!! I'm used to the way it handles now and drive appropriately but when my wife jumped into it a few months ago having not driven it since before the lift, she went about 4miles and came back saying she wasn't going to drive it ever again.
I would say the risks are much greater on the road rather than off when driving a lifted jeep. Off-road is below 5mph and not in a crowded environment where other vehicles and road users are in close proximity, so if you lose it off-road it is just yourself, your vehicle and your ego that can get damaged.

Thanks for all the warnings guys, I'll bear it in mind and tbh I never expected it to be otherwise. I learned my lesson the first day I bought it when I nearly crashed it. As for the little at a time... I'm too impatient, can't wait to get it to 4" and 35" as it is... I wish I won a lottery

We're not being unsupportive mate, but we've seen the results of inexperienced drivers in big 4x4s too many times.
The first thing sensibly is to get a body lift and some 31" tyres. Buy the tyres used from someone on here and sell
them on when you're ready for an upgrade. The body lift will stay on the vehicle when you upgrade.
31" tyres are 4" bigger than stock and make a hell of a difference. It's very cheap to get 31s on your TJ.
We will, of course help whatever you decide to do, but we encourage you to get some experience. A TJ on 35s
is a very dangerous weapon without experience.

Also and its been hinted at here........
The difference between a standard TJ....... fast, lithe, frugal ....ish easy to manoever almost good handling.
And a TJ on 35s with lockers tall lift 300lbs of winch and armour and tools (you will need 'em) is to say the least a different animal... Slow to get away from the lights (in comparison) all over the road at speeds over 60 and slowwwwwer to stop cos those wheels are virtually a 2 man lift to get them on the lugs!!!!
Oh yes..... my YJ when standard got 27mpg once, tooling around the Loire. Now lockered regeared armoured winched and 35'd It gets 13mpg. So be careful what you wish for. Doing it gradually as we are all saying.... You won't notice the drastic change but we have all seen people come to this 'Sport' pastime hobby or whatever with a sack full of cash and we see them in a vehicle that we would all sell teeth for. Within a year they're gone and they lose a packet....
Do it slowly you'll have a bundle of laughs and probably get to the 35s route a totally different way, probably cheaper too.

re the brake upgrade not wishin to diss anyone but surly the vanco system is simply gm chevy hydraboost system thats been around a long time on gm fulsize stuff would it not be cheaper to go that rout from a rotten doner you get big axels maybe v8diesel in to the bargain

Agreed bubba but toooooo much old oily stuff for most mere mortals but your right.
I looked at the Hydraboost stuff when the YJ failed the brakes part of the MOT with 35s.... (fine with 33s)!!!
All seemed a bit involved but really good.........
Eventually imported a Master Powerbrakes monster servo.
I was told YJ servo about 1000lbs pressure if lucky
TJ about 1200lbs
Master Powerbrakes about 15-1600lbs
It stops like it used to on 31s now and passes the MOT in fact will jump out of the rollers due to the tyre size
cost $425 when the dollar rate was 2 to 1!

Find some cash and make Steve an offer on his TJ. I’ve seen it and its one very nice well prepared Jeep, with all the mods. you want to do plus loads of others.

:mrgreen: makin it up as u go along on the basis of gleanin from the gurus and tryin to get there quick as poss is a shortcut that will potentially injure you, but I will prob beat you too it :jump:
but bare in mind its friday night so giv me another few hours and all logical thort is just a memory
