Hi everyone,
We have had our 1998 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 turbo diesel for about 4 months and the other day my other half was driving back from up north and it over heated and she didnt notice
obviously bad news followed and I thought it would be headgasket but I got there and it did seem bad, then the AA man got there and notice a hole in the side of the block.
Conrod probably went and banged a hole in the side.
Anyway...
Its new engine time and the question is how easy is it to swap the engine over?
We have already found an engine for £450 + vat but is it worth paying £700 for someone to fit it or is it better to fit ourselves?
If anyone has done this before any advice would be greatly appreciated
I have changed MR2 engines with help, gearboxes etc... so I am competent lol

changing an engine ain't too bad but before you buy that engine get it checked over properly,it could be just as bad as the one you are taking out, so it may be about to go bang itself. vm engines aren't known for being reliable!

You could buy a whole new diesel XJ for the cost of the engine plus the 700 to fit it.
Break the XJ you have and get a 4.0 petrol. Cost of ownership of a 4.0 is much cheaper
cus it doesn't keep breaking. And the 4.0 doesn't drive like a tractor.

dont spend the money scrap it and buy a 4 litre if you still want a jeep i know it sounds harsh but please take heed
you will keep throwing money away if you go for the repair option

Break it up for spares and buy another one.

had a con rod fail on mine and it destroyed the aircon pump and new starter motor, and wrecked new pistons and liners i.e now worth scrap
tried to source a replacement but they were silly money. dont buy a rover lump as some say they are a straight swap they are not and it's not worth the additional hassle.
talk the the vm specialist as he might have an engine for a price.
to be honest buy a petrol for less than a replacement and have cheaper running (i.e repairs) and the parts are more readily available
