Title: Oil Filler
Post by: PtP on April 08, 2009, 10:49:14 AM
Here’s a handy addition to any Jeep owners garage!

I bought a £5ish, cheap sprayer unit from The Range, a shop similar to B&Q and I’m sure they are just as cheap in Wilkinsons etc. I then simply modified the hand applicator part using a piece of copper plumbing pipe the same diameter (10mm IIRC) to look like these old pictures.

You can use it for filling all the different oils from the diffs to the transfer and main gear box. You just need to flush it out between oils. For the diffs, without a fill line, you might want to pre-measure the quantity of oil and just blow the whole lot into the axle in one go, whereas when you fill the transfer box you can just fill it to the overflow level.

The pump certainly makes the whole oil change/fill process a doddle.

I really cannot remember what I used to flush it, but I recall draining the bottle by standing it upside-down and the pipe work was hung up to drain also. I probably flushed it with a small amount of petrol or white spirit and then let it drain again. It’s not difficult and didn’t take long between getting to the different oil fillers on the Jeep.

Incidentally. I’ve used a similar bottle with the standard sprayer fitted for applying Waxoly under the Jeep. The Waxoyl needs to be warm though.

Sorry to barge in but what do you guys do with the old oil? I'll be changing mine soon and don't think pouring it down the kitchen sink is a good idea. I used to live close to a bike garage and give them all my old oil but now I don't have any friend mechanics.

Our local council rubbish tip has a disposal unit where you pour any old oil into it.
