Title: new engine or sell the shell
Post by: skippy on April 10, 2009, 07:02:34 PM
i was chuffed to buy a  cherokee 1998td sport ,for about 10 mins.Had major over heating problems. After checking everything out it seems likely to be a head gasket problem.I have been advised by a mechanic friend that there are also other possibilities why air is leaking into the coolant and rather than spend lots of £££ doing the gasket only to find the problem lies elsewhere it would be better to change the complete engine .also i know the gasket has been done before & there may be a fault in one of the four heads. Can anyone help me ? Where can i find another diesel engine , what sort of money am i lookin at to buy the lump & how much to have it changed over. The other possibility i have is to sell the shell which is in good condition &MOT till mid may & taxed till july. Can anyone tell me how much it could be worth or even any offers ?
I bought this jeep from a very dodgy car dealer in kent near paddock wood please others beware

To be honest i would say that you might be better off breaking yours for spares and buying a 4.0 XJ as there are plenty about and theres not an awful lot of difference in economy if driven sensibly.XJ diesels, especially trhe VM`s are prone to expensive head repairs and as yours is a 98 model i just wouldnt bother with the hassle and expense

Go on.

Spill the beans.

How much does it owe ya?

You've got to make that decision very soon.

Either throw more money at it or cut your losses.

Have you tried sale of goods act........If seller kicks off trading standards should  be consulted

Tracking down the previous owner (on the V5) may reveal a completely different history to the one that Arthur Daley has told you.
I think the sale of goods act says something like the goods must be fit for the purpose they were sold for.

Have you got witnesses to it overheating as soon as you drove it?

If no warranty given or implied it must be stated on the invoice - you have a case........the problem is if kerbside motors has no honour your stuffed - this is why main dealers have so many overheads and need to ask more for vehicles.

If you really want to repair or replace the engine maybe worth contacting these guys:

http://ccgi.vmspecialists.plus.com/rele ... 0561a4233c (http://ccgi.vmspecialists.plus.com/release/home.php?id=4788348a41b6e349e0561a4233c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Their site lists reconditioned engines for £1450.  They will give free impartial advice over the phone too.  Not sure but they may take your lump in exchange for a few quid off the replacement???.  If you go this way, get AA relay, get on your way and when she over heats, get the AA to trailer you to VM Specialists for free.

I got bookmarked a few junk yards that specialise in parting out Jeeps, post up if you want me to list 'em here for ya.  After what has just happend with your truck I figure you wont want to go down this route though.

Obviously your truck aint worth spending this kinda money on though so like the posts above, get shot of it and get pre March 2001 registered 4L, try to get a refund from Arthur Daley first though.

That's exactly the point of the post.
Litigation against v.dodgy dealer aside,
After you've spent £1450 on yer recon engine, plus fitting, plus all the other bits.

How much is a '98 TD Sport worth?

Maybe a grand or so if it's tidy, but only £300 odd with a shagged engine.

yesterday was a first for me & internet forums , totally amazed by all the responses .what a great bunch of Birty Dastards you are !
As for arthur (it's a great family car honest guv ) daley with a lot of letters & threats (of court action not violent action) i got £400 out of him . at the time my local garage led me to believe that they could sort my jeep out for this so i took the 400 &ran . i since found out the local grease monkey werent even aware these lumps have 4 individual heads . glad i got better advice .
although i'm in the uk at the mo i live in spain so i dont have anywhere to keep the car to break it or change the engine myself . financialy i'm on the way up s**t creek so a recon lump is way outta reach , so far found one for £400 (ironic ain't it) with 3mth warranty from a cherry thats done 67,000 miles . if you can post me those bookmarks gordy , the more the merrier .
any one know of  a honest garage in southeast london to do the job ? left my confession til the last , i now know i paid too much (even if it had no probs) £1400
