Title: Whats the recommendation on tyres - GC WJ '03

I've just had a look at my tyres and 2, or possibly three need replacing sometime soon.  The big question is what makes and types are recommended?  I hate admitting it, but all my use is still on-road (until someone can point me in the direction for some off-roading places for beginners!) - at the moment all five tyres are Goodyear Wrangler 235 65 R17's.  They've been on there since I bought the car, so although I dont have experience with other makes on the truck, they seem quite good.

Where would everyone recommend to get new tyres from at a good price, or would you look at part-worn on eblag?

With a permanent 4 wheel drive you should really replace all 4 at once to reduce transmission wear.

Sorry if this is a really obvious question, but how does it affect transmission wear?

Thanks everyone for the contributions here, they are much appreciated.

Hope its ok, but I have a few last questions before I part with the hard-earned and in short supply cash!

Is there anything that would have caused both offside tyres to have worn quicker than the nearside?  And could this have already affected wear in the transmission as mentioned in a previous post?

If I went for a tyre that has a 50/50 on-road/off-road rating, would I notice a dramatic increase in road noise and would it last fewer miles than a 90/10?

AT's on my GC are no noisier than 'road' tyres and are just starting to show wear after22k miles

Greg,  backed up by some sound advice on Birties found 5 as good as new Pirelli scorpion AT's on flea-bay. (a real steal !!) Did quite a bit of mileage since the MOT and can hear/feel no difference between the Pirelli's or the Wranglers I had before.

part worn tyres are a total unknown in regards to what they have been subjected to, they could last a long time or fail dramatically. If your buying second hand it's always best to buy of someone you know, and your aware of what the tyres have done (off roading rock crawling etc). a trye that has a 50/50 split for road/off road will be slightly noiser than a road biased tyre but it shouldn't be that bad. I have some kingpin remould AT/s and the road noise is not bad at all and after two years of use they have just worn past the half way. As for mud tyres these might be slightly softer to allow the tread to move slightly more so allowing them to clear the treads more easily but shouldn't wear dramatically.


if you want that slightly more agressive look buy a set of AT/s, also they will give that little more grip when the snow arrives
