how many keys have you got? (take it it is the round grey ones)
try the second set?
are you parked near a transmitter of any kind?

cant remember if they are the rolling code type or not, key cutters like timpsons can read and copy transponder keys.

Yep.  Tried both keys, same story.  and they are the rolling code type (Grey).

As far as the trasnsmitter............ it's parked up outside me folks house, just like it has been countless times in the past.   Never caused a problem before. :(

could be dodgy reciever bit in the dash/column, you've try the obvious stuff, if you can I would try moving the xj a 100 metres or so, happened to me in scouse and it turned out to be interference, you in the AA/RAC??

Cheers Stew.

The key fobs are workin' fine.  Both open and close the doors, but the alarm doesn't seem to arm, and the immobilisers locked out the keys for some reason!!!

Thanks Steve I'll try movin' it if I can.

I'm kinda hopin' there's a 'trick' to reset them,

you know.........stand on one leg and hop up and down six times with the key in ya left ear!!.........kinda thing

This happens on occassions with mine Chris, flicking the key on and off a couple of times gets it working, although I'm sure you probably tried that. My alarm doesn't seem to arm and every now and then when it starts I have nothing from the stalks, indicators etc, same thing, key on and off and it rights itself.

You have the SKIS (Sentry Key Immobiliser System) on your '98. This system reads the data in the transponder keys (as you know) but also shares secret key data and VIN information with the instrument cluster and the engine controller. The remote keys have no effect on the immobiliser on '98 onwards XJs. The most common failure is the SKIS module in the steering column. You need to get it to a dealer or a specialist equipped with the DRBIII scan tool to diagnose/repair the system i'm afraid. If the yellow 'key' warning light is on, either both keys are duff (highly unlikeley) or the system has another fault. Apart from checking the wiring to the SKIS module is secure you'll be wasting your time letting anyone without the proper kit mess with it.

Cheers Mike.

I'm about to sort out having it recovered to the Dealers.  Hopefully it just needs their computer to remind it it's an imobiliser and not a toaster!!!

Chris

As a mechanical muppet I do use Westbury for servicing

Westbury are expensive but I do think they are for a garage OK

They do struggle with the idea of off roading Jeeps tho but when my Cherry was left there I really can't fault how they helped

Oh yes KD stuck that will be fun even more than a certion Lardie 110 :smt044  :smt042

Well it would seem that it wasn't as simple as replacing the SKIS unit!

They've fitted a new one but can't get it to talk to the computer.  Looks like at least Monday now before I get me truck back.

Just spoken to Westburys again.

They still haven't been able to fix it.  They can't get the SKIS unit to communicate with the Engine management computer.

Don't sound like they know what's wrong with it either.

This is gona cost me!!!!!!!!

Those crank sensors cause all kinds of trouble Mine went but didn't generate any codes. Others can completeley block the data bus so you can't get any sense out of the engine management system whatever equipment you have. Bastard things.
