Title: 3.1 td swop to what ?

HI all , i need to find a replacement engine for my 3.1 td its a 2000 yr Grand Cherokee . Does any one know if i could put a 4ltr straight 6 petrol in from say 1996/7 Grand Cherokee , or has any one ideas for a diesel swop

You'd have to swap not only the engine, but all the electronics and dials, possibly radiator and
aircon system. As I recall (used to have a 3.1TD) it's got a 44RE box, which was only found on
the 5.2 V8 ZJ, so it may not mate to a 4.0 easily.

WJs are getting cheap now, probably easier and cheaper to break the one you have
and buy a 4.0 WJ.

Far too complex a job. Scrap it or fit a correct replacement.

Thanks for your input and on reflection i have to say you are both bang on the mark. I still have one or two options with the lump i have taken out so will keep you posted !!!

Hi , prev owner ran without oil after turbo went, and picked up on number five big end and rod .
I have the crank in the eng shop and he thinks it might just take a 0.25 oversize , which is the largest oversize available, also the journal on the con rod is damaged because the shell had spun. :-(

Bugger. Have you rang around some breakers to see if you can just get a new engine?

Ok now hold on to something solid !!!! the couple of quotes have ranged from just under 2 k to nearly 3 k.

Thanks for  the help guys . Ive just come back from the engine shop and the crank is now repaired and i have a second hand con rod on its way so i`m going to rebuild my engine !.
