Post by: Dave69 on April 15, 2009, 08:44:29 PM
Any recommendations for a ball joint press ?

ideally not a cheap and nasty type but not starship prices

Dave I have one of these if it's of any help?

You're more than welcome to borrow it.

I lifted this photo off the Stu Olson site which is a great point of reference for changing the ball joints.

A normal G clamp won't do it unless you are very lucky. I used this:

Just bear in mind that he's using the specific jeep kit with the press and not the ones that come with the ball joint press.

I got one of those presses when I did my ball joints and made some adapters to fit to ball joints from scrap steel. I cut the tubing for the angled adapter at about 6°. I can measure the diameters of the steel used if it helps.

swapped the ball joint but not in the conventional way.

cut the ball joint and pressed out the shell with a g-clamp

cleaned the housing and pressed the new ball joint back into place.

it can be done with a g-clamp but the cheap ones will bend and break.

Looks like i will get one of these just to make it easier next time
