not to well up on wrangler clutches so some help please , karl the guy with me at silverdale with the black yj 4.0 cant get his motor into gear it just grinds and when its i n neutral and engine running its got a rattle but it goes when he puts the clutch pedal down , the fluid is ok and it has no leaks , is it a thrust bearing issue or is there a more common fault ?? your help please ....kev.....

sounds like a release bearing collapsing or on its final legs, in the worst case it could have damaged the diaphram on the clutch pressure plate so not releasing fully. I know it happens on tj's but not heard of it happening on yj's but you never know.

That sounds like the release bearing.
Had same with mine - within 20 miles it chewed the clutch - so DONOT drive it - or else it will be the full clutch.
There is one listed on ebay - but don't know if his is the hydraulic combined one

either way dont drive it and take the gear box out.
if it is the thrust bearing might be worth while swapping the clutch etc as well while your at it

what year some done got a sneaky all in one slave/release bearing

it is a 1993 / 1994 yj 4.0 it is defo a L plate.....kev....

there is a slight chance you have the internal one easy to tell if you cant see an axternal slave you have the dearer internal bastard

right its the dear internal one and we changed it and its still the same has any one got a good clutch for a 1994 4.0 wrangler so we can make sure its not gearbox issues..or has any one else got any other ideas what we should do ........kev.......

Before you pull it apart again......
I had a problem when I changed mine. Brand new clutch and hydraulic slave, bled ok but not releasing properly. The clutch master cylinder piston may only be half way up the cylinder. Try pushing the pedal to the floor and then let it flick up sharply as if your foot has slipped off the pedal. Do this several times to work the piston back to the top of the cylinder. Worked for me.

it still has quite a bad feel , like vibrating until you push the clutch pedal in and it makes a noise when driving but it doesnt grind when trying to put it into gear any more , are the 4.0 yj's and and the Cherokees the same clutch and gearbox ?

Yes and no. The 4.0 Cherokee was never available in the UK with manual (Mine's a US import). The 2.5 diesel Cherokee uses the same AX15 gearbox but the clutch is different.

can i convert it to auto easy and what donor motor would i need....

Unless you can find another YJ or a TJ. You'll need to keep the bellhousing off your old one as only early YJs had the same hydraulic release bearing in the UK.

i have spoke to my mate karl and he wants to go auto . what problems are we going to come across and will a 4.0 auto Cherokee be a good dona motor

You could fit the AW4 from a Cherokee but it has electronic control so you will need the AW4 control module, possibly the engine control module for the same car, which needs to be a '93 or '94 to work with the existing sensors on your YJ, the wiring harness from the XJ and someone who knows what they're doing to splice all the electrics together properly. You'll also need custom propshafts as the transmission will be longer. The easiest option is to find an automatic YJ or TJ with the old 32RH transmission as this has no electronics.

because of we dont know if its the clutch or gearbox thats faulty and cant afford to fit a new clutch and then find out its the gearbox , this is why we thought a donor motor eg mot fail thats got a good motor,clutch and tranny would be the best option , what would be the easiest and cheapest way to fix it ? would the 2.5 Cherokee tranny and clutch go straight on a 4.0 if thats all we can get hold of ....

No, the 2.5 petrol has an AX5 which is smaller and isn't tough enough for a 4.0. By the way, did you check the pilot bearing.

The AX15 gearbox from an 95-99 2.5 TD will do but you would need your original bellhousing to accomodate your hydraulic release bearing and the diesel clutch is wrong. Also the clutch for a 4.0 with a conventional release bearing is different so only the clutch for the correct year YJ will do.

If ya can ................. And it is worth it. Get a box from a 2000 and up TJ cos its got the NV3500 as fitted to the Ram for a year or two and the Dakota, its got a lower 1st 4.01 or some'at and a longer overdrive and it will take 350 ft lbs of V8 power so says the makers. Fitted one to my YJ 2 years ago with a Band M shift and so far its great cost me £400 but worth every penny. The AX 15 is fine but 33s and 35s will mullar the thing in short order. I know I've done 2!...........
