Well for those of you that dont know I blew my read diff at Ribbo! Now the bit where the diff/axle meets the pasanger side wheel, well theres fluid coming out of there as well, running down the inside of the hub/wheel.
Someone said to me I needed a diff and an axle? Is this right or does the diff have everyting I need on it already?
Is there anythign else I need to order like seals and that type of thing!
-
dunno how much time & money you have but I would get a complete second hand axle and fit it, then build up your spare one at a later date.
-
YEa thats the plan, get one from a breakers! Am just checking that there nothign elso I need to do the job! Dont wanna order a diff and all I get is the round diff lump with none of the metal shafts that go to the wheels.
I been bitten so many times ordering the wrong part, I just want to be sure this time
Anyone know if the diff comes with the metal shafts that go to the wheels?
Or do I have to ask for somthign different as well as the diff?
Whats the differance between the diff and the axle.
And yes when it comes to cars I realy am this dumb
-
Owen don't panic mate your not alone
THe diffs the roundy thing in the middle of the axle
-
Owen, the diff is the centre part inside the "round bit" in the axle which is the complete thing that goes from side to side.In side the axle and connecting the diff to drive the wheels, are the shafts,so you probably best to get a complete second hand axle with everything on as its esier to change

Right Gotcha! SO i will ask for the compleate thing, cool!
Now as I understand it I have to have the diff/axle for the same model of ZJ 2.5 TD Laredo, as the pertol ones wont fit right? :?
-
just needs to be a diesel, they have the limited slip diff, dont think the petrols did, also the ratio may be different in the petrol.
Just get the lowest milage diesel axle you can, and make sure it have the brake calipers on as it make swapping over much faster
-
Right gonna start phoning about and find one!
By the way Tank, we missed you at the weekend!
-
You need a Dana 35 ZG Grand Cherokee diesel axle, one from an XJ won't fit, and a petrol ZG will be the wrong ratio. Make sure you ask for the halfshafts if you think you need them as well 'cos they quite often come without as they're £300+ each from a dealer.
Don't worry about the brake calipers as they.re only fitted with 2 bolts and if you undo your existing ones and hang them out of the way while you swap axles, you won't have to disturb the hydraulics.
-
Well its not looking good fellas, :D
So unless I can sort something out, my pride and joy is gonna be parked up thisafternoon and left to rot untill I can sort some cash out!
Back to taxi's and the buss, cant believe it, aint been on a buss for 17 years!
-
Damn.....how much they wanting for Delivery?
:?
-
£90 and £450 for the axl assembly
-
Just a thought, how much for the bits to rebuild the diff, cos there's a guy breakin' a 4L grand on e-bay.
Just a thought. You'd have to fit y'a rebuilt diff to get the gearing right, but the rest of the axle should be OK.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
-
....eeeekk...... where is the breakers??? Might be a travelling Birty who could pick it up and drop it off on their travels.....you never know and would save a few bob!!!
-
It'll probably pay to do an autopsy on the old one first and see what bits you need.
-
Autopsy on the old one? To be honest I wouldnt know what I was looking for mate!
-
Not trying to be offensive, but will probably manage it...
But you really should buy a landy... you're giving jeeps a bad name with all the bits you keep breaking :)
On a more serious note... at least you can pick up bits for a Landy anywhere.... (Just go to a pay and play and you can probably pick up half the drive train :) )
Or get an old CJ or similar.....
-
Its at the point now where im thinking of getting rid, cutting my losses
-
I'll go to 3p and a pork pie for the salvage.
-
Have you seen it Mike...??? :rotflmao:
-
.....I don't think he was talkin' melton mowbray........
-
Ohh I need some advice fellas! Been on to lighthouse Jeep and heres are the parts to do with the diff and prices! And I asked for Dana 35 parts as advised by Mike. :

What do I needd?
Open Diff £268. (what ever that is?)
LSD 3 way diff £319 (still no idea)
Halfshafts £165 each (I know what they are
)
Ring and pinion £295 (not a clue what thst is)
C clip (still no idea)
Somthing seals £240 (cant read my own writing)
Wheel somthing £10 (not a clue what thst is)
So whats an open diff and will it fit, and do you recon that these are just the gubbings inside the diff, or the whole round thing as well????
-
Have you seen it Mike...??? :rotflmao:
Oh did I hear the clancking of a Gauntlet hitting the ground?? :smt019
To be honest mate I dinno what pissed me off more! My truck throwing its diff, or not being able to engage in muddy combat with ya! :rotflmao:
-
An LSD is a limited slip diff. You'll need one of them!!!!
Ring and pinion is what the teeth came off on yours, so you'll need some of them too!!
An open diff is a none LSD. don't need one aof them. You'll need c clips. They hold the drive shafts in.
And new rear axle seals. Your drive shafts may be OK- if ya' lucky!!

Part from that I trid 5 different 4x4 breakers this morning only coming up witht the £500 one!
-
hey owen
have you tried these guys
just down the road from me and do all types of 4x4 breaking
http://www.equicar.co.uk/ (http://www.equicar.co.uk/)
Shep
-
Cheers Shep, but I tried them first, no dice :(
-
bugger.....
-
Cheers anway. Lighthouse have all the parts I need, and I imagine they are good prices as well, but still more than the breakers!
Maybe I should have someon open it up and tell me exactly whay the problem is, maybe I only need a few parts!
-
yea need to know what is gone....
but those prices are still big numbers
if you could get away with just the ring and pinion with fitting you have almost hit the cost of that whole axel
with the way you only managed to spin just one rear wheel it would seems like you would need the LSD as well
you could get prices from http://www.ring-pinion.com/ (http://www.ring-pinion.com/)
and see what it would cost to fix it instead of swapping out an axel
at least you would know you got good new bits in there
-
Bugger! Shep beat me to it!
Maybe! :?
But don't be supprised if you need a new Diff and Ring & Pinion.
-
Found a place called Hills Motors who do 4x4 salvage.
The want £450 for the diff/axle assembly.
Including VAT its £528
Plus posting its £640
Can you believe that" :( :(
-
Unfortunately YES!
-
Hopefully Em is getting the diff looked at this morning!
-
If it's any consulation.......
Since the drive shafts and wheels didn't fall off on the way home........
The 'C' clips are probably OK!!
-
Well at least thats one result!
-
Right, the diff has been looked at! It turns out that the isnt much left in tact! Lumps of ripped off metal was mainly found, bits of cog and the like!
So basicly is knackered, only one half shaft left in tack! :( :(
-
Look at it this way, if there is that much damage.......
You're bloody lucky you didn't loose a wheel on the way home and kill ya' self!!!!!
That salvaged axle's soundin' like the best bet.
-
I know mate, I just aint got the cash! :(
Its looking like my Jeep days may be drawing to an end
If I cant find the cash before the week is over I will be selling her and cutting my losses! I have to have a motor for work and cant have the ZJ laid up when, even with a screwed diff she could pay for a car.
-
That sucks mate. :( I really feel for you!! :( :(
Don't give up hope just yet though we'll try and find some way of gettin' you movin' again.
-
Not good
Cpould you get a £100 runabout as a stop gap?
-
Yea could get a cheap banger for the short term, then thers the insurance of it, propably tax maybe MOT, and the few jobs it probably needs doin! All wonga mate, but thaks for the idea Stew

Its looking like my Jeep days may be drawing to an end
I have'nt met you yet!, but i know you would not be happy without a jeep and froading, i know it seems like one problem after another, but where there's a will.
Unless of course your thinking of selling the zj and getting another jeep?
-
-
Owen does your car insurance cover you as some do for third party driving a car if so that'll be the insurance covered so all you need is a run around with tax/MOT
Secondly I've seen a bloke mentioned on Jeep Club Jeepman Jeff? who sources Jeep parts anyone know about him maybe he could help?
If you sell your Grand you won't get much for it as it is and I reckon you'll regret it and want another in a few weeks
Hope you can sort it mate
