Wheel Bearings and hibs dies on the Tj :(
« on: August 22, 2005, 09:47:03 AM »

Okay, TJ went in for an MOT while I was on Hols (Very nice hols)

Got back to find the TJ had failed... front wheels are so wobbly that it's dangerous to drive... bearings have failed and taken the Hubs out with them :(

Now, Bit pissed at myself for not checking them etc etc.... but that's by the by.... new Jeep ones are £230 a side....

So, what are my alternatives... are there "Greasable" versions etc etc?

Also, how can I make sure it doesn't happen again....

Cheers

Lighthouse do them for £140ish +vat each. There isn't really any alternative unless you want to go very exotic and expensive.

Thanks, Bit of a damper about the TJ :)

Can recommend the African Reserve at Sigean if you go down that way (Between Narbonne and Perpignan) Excellent day out....

Don't go to Andorra..... 3h queues in and out to get through customs... :( mind you, we went over the "Pass de la Casa" at 24xx metres and then drove up a track to the top of the ski lifts at 27xx metres... that's the highest I've been before and I didn't have to walk anywhere.... like being on top of the world :) Will try to post a few pics when I get time.

Any advice about preventing the hubs from going again? Or is it a fact of life when you play in the mud?

Look at www.acmejeepparts.com

Greaseable axle seals - keep the crap out. They're too late for your old axles, but will protect your new one.

Why does it say they can't be used with disconnects? ??

And will that protect the hub as well? I thought that just protected the axles and Diffs ??

not too bad to fit

double hex socket for the bolts holding the hubs on can be a pain

then just a big feckin hammer to scare the old hubs off if its the first time they have been taken off

Right, Jobs done...

Thanks Mike for the description on how to do it... You missed a few tools.....

5' Breaker bar...
2 x cole chisels
large hammer
Bearing puller

Managed to break a 13mm Socket so had to resort to 1/4WW (1/2") which fitted fine...

Story goes like this...
Jack and chock, stands etc....
Remove wheel (36mm Socket will not fit through the center hole)
put it in 4WD and get girly to stand on the brakes...
Remove the split pin and crown and undo the drive shaft bolt
WD40 the three bolts front and rear...
Wait 2 mins...
WD40 the three bolts front and rear...
Wait 2 mins...
WD40 the three bolts front and rear...
Try and undo the three bolts.... first side they undid okay... it was the second side it split the socket (Kamasa, so not a dead cheap set!)
Now, in theory the hub / bearing is released....
NOPE!
Hit it with a hammer to loosen it..... Did it move.....
NOPE!
Visit parents and dig out old bearing puller. Put that on and successfully removed the bearing from the hub.... Bugger..!
I Know, shove a large screw driver down the seam and as soon as it's moved a bit it'll be okay...
NOPE!!!
Okay, Am Pissed off now.... one large cole Chisel in the groove and belt shit outta it... Progress at last... but still no bananas..... Get a HUGE cole Chisel and bash hell outta that into the gap.... STILL NO BANANAS....
Eventually did it all three sides and off the whole lot falls.... :D
Put it back together the first time and put the disk shield round the wrong way (didn't take notice of which way round it was when it all fell :) )

On the second side I used the bearing puller to put resistance on the hub so that as I bashed hell out of the chisels the bearing puller was pulling as well... this worked only marginally better!

Still, it's done now....... Hope it lasts....

Just got to but a new 13mm Socket and a wheel stud remover so that I can re-fit my spacers..... Oh, and return my Mechanics tools.... :)

And check the torques in a couple of days time....

Oh, and fill it with petrol :(
PS, KD... Up Yours :)

Yup - had the same issue on the Cherokee - 2x hubs = near £300!?!  :(

And you wonder why I've switched back to a Landy?!?

Actually... the Jigsaw thing is pretty apt - pretty much everything is like a big Mechanno set - like the early Jeeps, before they stuck a load of electronic shite into em. Don't get me wrong - I loved my Cherry, but....

On the wheel bearing front... how about £4.75 for a wheel bearing instead of over £120? That's a pretty good start...
