Hi,

I could do with some help here. Currently my Jeep Cherokee is as standard as they come and I am looking to fit a suspension lift and change the tyre. Suspension lift I am looking for a max of 1.5 to 2.5inc lift as I don't want to compromise the ride too much. Tyres (fit BFG All Terrain) I currently run on 235/70 R 16 and I suppose I could fit, before the lift, also 235/85 R 16 and not have problems with the tyre rubbing against the body panels?

Has anyone got any experience of this here? Also I am around Cambridge so any suggestions where to go round here?

for what its worth... i have 245 70 16 bfg all terrains, no lift, no rub
the diesel ones are heavier and need different lift to petrol motors
the underneath has been left exposed on these, and parts are prone
to damage, if you are going to the trouble of lifting it, maybe consider
protecting the underside....we live and learn

As IOM has said, LOST is a good place to start, they even have a euro sub forum and a diesel section. Bear in mind that the crd engines are heavier, so heavy duty suspension is required.

The cheap option is to fit spacers, but if you want a decent ride, then you will have to replace the springs and shocks. I think you are talking at least £800 plus 5 hours to fit.

I've not got around to lifting my KJ yet, but I have fitted an ASFIR aluminium skid plate (approx £200), to protect the oil filter, autobox and transfer case, since these are the lowest and most vulnerable items on the Jeep.

Thank you to all that have replayed. May be I got my tyre fact wrong but I am looking to fit taller tyres with a bit more bit than the current ones I have. So when Moose suggested he was running 245/75 R 16 those are actually wider not taller, correct?
Also BFG All Terrain are supposed to be the best but what would you recommend instead? Currently I Goodridge Wrangles on mine and really they don't really have a lot of bight offroad.
Suspension, what do you recommend? I know the bill is going to be big one way or another, any one has any experience over here? Where would I find a good kit? Also I do like the idea of a "proper" skidplate, but I suppose might make more sense once a lift was in al depending if it didn't reduce to much ground clearance ( any photos of it?).

i'm sure i'll be corrected but the 245 part is the extra tread, so they are taller than 235...

The 235 bit and 245 bit relates to tyre width,the aspect ratio is the height,so that would be the 70 or 75 part,so a 245/75/16 has a width of 245mm and the wall height is 75% of that so around 183mm which x2 plus the 16 inch of the rim equals approx 30 inches

Looked at CRD's and couldn't believe how low the oil filters are deffo lookat some form of skid plate...

some tyre diameters.

235/70/16 = tyre diameter of 29"
245/75/16 + tyre diameter of 30.7"
235/85/16 + tyre diameter of 31.98"

going to 235/85/16 is an increase in diameter of 3"s.

not sure on what lift you will need to allow the wheel to articulate in the wheel arch without fouling the arch.

Now I have my answer, I know what to get...perfect!!!
So I will get 245/75 R 16 if I can find them that is... and an nice skidplate and later at some point a 2in lift once the shock & coils are knacked!!!

i've been called faaaaar worse

did you ever hear of Tong? there is a really big course there with 3 types of 'lanes'
i took mine and was really suprised with no mods, just AT tyres
the routes were clearly marked, and there were loads of helpful people, it was a jeepey do
keen to hear about skid plates, one company i was looking at stopped doing them and then
folks started making their own with oil drain holes (important for filter/+oil change)

I believe the biggest tyre you can fit on an unlifted KJ is 245/70r16, although some trimming may be required.

With a 2.5" lift, you can fit a 31" tyre.

Also consider any width increase as bigger tyres can be wider , in the UK tyres protruding from the wheel arches / flares is illegal, so be prepared to shell out lots of dosh for wider flares.

Also be aware that your tyres may clear the arches but due to the increased size your turning circle may be decrease cos they rub on body work horizontally not vertically.

Eg fitted some 31" stiverstone Extremes on my YJ 2" larger dia and 3" wider, NB all the extra width is on the outside ,I needed to trim the standard flares with a jigsaw as a temp measure for vertical clearance, managed to get a set of 6 1/2" flares off EBay for £130, glass fiber so probably not as indestructible as the plastic ones but far cheaper. In all it was a lot of hassle and its now very noisy on tarmac, hard braking is "very squirmy" on tarmac, cornering also compromised, and turning circle is now reduce an they rub on the leaf springs.

Was it worth it, hell yes, it looks awesome, in the snow its awesome, mud I have yet to try because everything is frozen but I expect it should be awesome, having said this my jeep is a weekend toy for off roading primarily, if yours is a road toy think carefully before swapping tyres.

Pippobug. Where abouts are you?

I have a set of 5 icon jeep rims (fitted to late XJs, some wranglers and early KJ's) shod with 245/75/16 BF Goodrich Mud Terrains you could try on if you are close to Manchester. If they are a good fit and you make me the right offer they could be yours together with a sixth spare matching rim should the worse happen. The tyres have 11mm tread remaining of the 15mm they started life with.
