Strange problem on my 97 wrangler TJ.  

When turning sharp corners at low speed (especially when setting off from stopped) there is a rattling / clunking sound that comes from the back of the jeep (sounds like tin cans being dragged along the ground!).  I'm not sure the exact location of the noise but I was wondering if it could be something wrong with the rear diff?  Or something else???   :-)

It's the rear diff. The first thing to try is drain the oil, refill with 75W90 GL5 gear oil with a bottle of Mopar friction modifier added.

I have the same problem in my 98 Cherokee Laredo.   If I change the oil and add the additive as prescribed by Mike will it release the seizure or is it likely that a strip down will be needed as well . My other question is  ; Is there any way to remove the LSD function all together as I do not really need it and the only use I get out of the car is Towing Boats around the country so she really does not even get dirty (shame).

  Seriously Need Help NOW !!!

     Because My Cherokee really is'nt used very much I have a serious issue with the rear dif . Despite having changed the oil and added the Mopar the rear drive is still locked up ..
   I am serious about the question as to whether it is possible to have a conventional rear diff as opposed to LSD .  I have tried doing the figure of eight stuff and trying to unseize it as per other posts on this forum without any luck.
              So Is it Possible ??
   Or is there someone down here in Devon that can repair it for me ??

You can happily replace the LSD with an open diff, though you will lose off-road ability.

All UK spec TJs had Dana 44s with Trac-Loc limited slips fitted. Your easiest soloution would be to get a complete used axle from another TJ, and it has to be from a TJ, and from one with the same engine size and transmission, but there's no gaurantee it won't be as shagged as yours. You couldfit either a new open diff or something like a Detroit True-trac, but any replacement diff has to be set up properly, you can't just bolt it in and go.

I'm sure an ebay seller was advertising replacement clutch packs for the Dana 44 LSD recently at silly prices (~£60?). It might have been Mansfield 4x4 ltd (landrover-jeep-parts) so it could be worth giving them a call to see if they still have any. This would sort out your noisy LSD unit once fitted and I beleive it isn't too hard to do?

I have in stock a TJ Dana44 rear axle done 1000ish miles from my wrangler before I swoped out to the Dana60's - bid me I could be tempted to sell it.

    I spent some time phoning around and No-one (garage) seems to want to touch the job !!!!!  Is it really that bad ?
