the ally panels on a landy stretch badly when dented and are tricky to get right

The heat on an aluminium panel can be judged using washing up liquid on the reverse, it's ready when the liquid goes brown/black.

I think the roughly beatn panel look is pretty cool on an offroader, it shows it has been used and abused properly

As a proffesional ATA acredited vehicle body repair technician (tin basher) with over 20 years in the game, the best advice I can give is just do it!
It's one of those skills that is almost impossible to explain without physically showing someone the basics, but as with everything else, it takes practice.
Just take your time, use light hits with the hammer and work the metal slowly. If you have any old panels kicking about, have a go on those first, just to get a feel for it.

i would have thought cut the panel and riviet a new patch in place.

if using heat by oxy gas torch then use a smoky yellow flame as any other will be too fierce, the yellow flame is enough to soften the metal and be able to beat it back into place but if the panle has stretched then your in for a steep learning curve but remember dont rush or you will create more work for yourself
