Which transfer case have I got..
« on: October 06, 2009, 05:58:52 PM »

.. and where can I get a replacement?

My 97 Cherokee 4.0 (facelift) makes a grinding noise from the t-case, it's worse when in 4wd. I reckon that the chain has stretched and is rubbing on the casing. Having spoke to Mik at Rednexx, he thought it best to find a lower mileage unit and replace the whole thing rather than just the chain. The trouble is that every Cherokee that I find in a breaker's yard has mega miles on it or has already been stripped of it's transfer box (and rear axle :icon_rolleyes:).

From what I can gather, there are two types of t-case 231 and 242. One with part time 4wd and one without. Mine has 2H/4part time/4full time/Neutral/4lo, so which model is it? And also, which model/year cherokees am I looking for?

Once this little issue is taken care of, I'm off to the lanes!   :icon_biggrin:

(I don't suppose anybody has a spare one lying around in their shed?)

All the 4ltr autos sold in this country have the NP/NV 242 transfer case. You need one from a 1997 or newer because during 1996 they changed the rear output shaft arrangement.

You can also fit the NP/NV 231 transfer case but you have to make sure the t-case input gear is the same spline count as the one you are removing (I think some early ones are 21 spline while later ones and 4ltr autos are 23 spline but dont rely on this snippet of info!). Doing this also means that you lose the ability to use 4x4 on the tarmac (but as most Cherokees spend their entire life in 2wd this might not be a problem)

Like this one?

£60 seems like a reasonable price..

I've asked the seller how many miles it's done and what state it's in, but it all sems like a bit of a risk.

That looks good to me and he accepts offers so you can always make a £50 max offer and at that price you really are not risking much. It has the right rear output shaft and looking at the 1999 auto box he is also selling I would say the vehicle was scrapped due to an overheating engine caused by the coreplug at the back of the head rusting through. This means the T-case was probably fine prior to the vehicle being broken up.

If you don't buy it I might!

I've got myself another transfer case.. just need to bolt it on now. I'm hoping that Mik at Rednexx will do it for me for a reasonable fee.

Please do it yourself and take plenty of pictures so we can all see how it is done. It would be interesting to see the state of the chain when you open up the old t-case (I assume you will do a post mortem).

I will indeed take the old one apart and see what's going on inside. I wish I'd done the same when I sorted out the diff and axle a few weeks ago. It was only after all the grinding noises at the back stopped that I noticed all the grinding noises from the t-case..

Update: The cherokee has gone to Rednexx to have the new t-case fitted. Should have it back in a few days. The new tyres (General AT 2's) have made a big difference to the t-case's shift between 2 and 4 wheel drive, but it still sounds like it's full of gravel. I got the new(ish) t-case off ebay (as posted above) for £45 plus 25 quid delivery. Next issue is the noticeable shunt when engaging drive from the park position, maybe a UJ has worn? It feels as though the drive is taking up slack before engaging with a bang from the back end somewhere.

Can't wait to get the XJ back and go laning!
