Mysterious oil spots
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:01:37 PM »

Well after much head scratching, I think I have traced the source of the mysterious oil spots under the front of the TJ.

As you look from the front, its about a foot inside the front passenger wheel in line with the axle. I think the culprit is the steering damper.

Only replaced this (or rather Doctor Bubbs did) in May.

Question is now, "do they all do that sir" or is it toasted. Presume a naff seal ?

Could be coincidence but I have said recently the steering seems vague again but the boss tells me I'm just used to driving Panzer's n associated German stuff  :003: so that is not conclusive.

Got it from Lighthouse, got to get some new rear shoes soon so if you guys reckon its a duffer I'll have a word.

Over to you folks  :icon_winkle:

it's only a few bolts so release one end and try sliding the piston in and out

you sure it aint come from above like the power steering resevoir you did say you had a sirvice and oil change they may have over topped the power steering

would be unusual for a damper to fail so quickly after all your tj spends a lot of its life sleeping in the shed

Its been loosing something for a while, 3 months or more.

Spots on the drive before it lived in the garage / had a service etc.

Will pay particular attention to power steering odd's n sods & have another look.

I'll keep an eye on it for something from above working its way down but I cant see anything. Needless to say, have given the damper a clean all over but especially around the solid end nearest the wheel. Presume they are oil filed anyway, not gas ??

Might get the boss to work the steering from side to side whilst I look from below, either way, will let nature take its course & see.

Is there any oil anywhere else in the area (on the Jeep) You'd be amazed where oil gets to when left a while. The leak might be somewhere else but warmth and wind blast makes it sneak along things ....

I know what you mean Alan, after Cheapfest it got the obligatory jet wash so its fairly clean under the Jeep (must get round to using the Mr Sheene soon :003:) & its been nice & dry in the garage since.

Will have a proper look again tonight. Might even have a word with Jurassic O if he is passing to come & have a nose about & give a 2nd opinion, hint hint  :icon_winkle:
