ABS question

Occasionally the ABS light comes on but goes off next time our XJ is started up. Put this down to a bit of poo in one of the sensors or a dodgy sensor.

However, last week or so, seems to be more of a regular event.

On top of this I have noticed that when used from cold, when stopping at the end of our road, about 50 yds from home, there is a pulsing sensation & a reduction in breaking power through the pedal.
Not to be confussed with locking the wheels, eg this happens at low speed in the dry.

Could this be the ABS Pump / module / controller or a dodgy wheel sensor playing up.

Is there something I can check out or are we talking dealer time.

Dont want to take any chances with Brakes so any & all advice appreciated.

the pulsing in the pedal is the abs kicking in.
Try taking off the abs wheel sensors (easy job), giving them a clean (as well as the toothed bit on the hub) and electrical contact cleaner on the plugs.

See if that helps

I have a similar thing happen from time to time.  There is a T junction at the bottom of a steep hill about 1/4 mile from work.

Every now and then when braking for the junction, the pedel will go very soft (almost to the floor) with a pulsing/ vibration through it.  It doesn't seem to effect the braking performance at all though, just feels odd.  If you pump the brake it stops.

I put it down to the ABS cutting in for some reason, just another of those Jeep things!

ABS light came on once as well, never happened since!!

I thought it would be the ABS kicking in but at that speed on a dry road, thought it might be the pump type thing instead, best investigate the sensors then.

Now where are they & what the hell am I looking for  :lol:

Best get me manual on cd dusted off

Is this something a mechanical virgin like me should be poking around with ?

XJ's have a problem with the back wheels locking up on the first press of the brake pedal, after it has been standing following being driven in the wet or on cold damp mornings. Those without abs find the arse end skidding about and those with abs find that it takes care of the problem but you will feel the juddering, which is the ABS doing it's job. I don't know why they lock up, it may be something to do with brake dust as I cleaned mine out once and it didn't do it for a couple of weeks.

I'm having the exact same problem today.

My abs light occasionally comes on but disappears if i turn the ignition off and on again.

Today (afters yesterday rather muddy session) the abs is definitely not working (!) and the light is permanently on.

I dont have a maintenance manual yet (can't seem to find a haynes for post 97 XJ's), can anyone tell me what the abs sensors look like / where i'll find them??

On the axle ends there are what look like large cogs for want of a better word.  Screwed to the hub unit is a little tubular sensor with a cable out of the back of it.  The end of this little 'can' is positioned up against the teeth on the cog.  This is the ABS unit.  Give them all a good clean and see if this cures your problem. :wink:

IIRC ABS 'self-tests' when you go through 15mph after start up- if you touch the brake pedal when it self-tests you will feel abs working - could it be this :?:

That's usually a symptom of a wheel sensor. The system can't tell if they are working properly till the jeep is moving (because it compares the speed reading from each wheel) Once the jeep is on the move, if one of the four wheel speeds is considerably different to the others when the brake is not being pressed, the system considers that the sensor on this wheel is suspect, shuts the system down and puts on the ABS light until the next startup. The system will tell you why it put the light on if scanned with a DRBII scan tool.

check wiring harness coming through bulk head on NS,its thin harness,if the crommet has been taken out to fit a cb radio the harness can rub on the sharp edge of the crommet hole,shorting it out to earth and then your light comes on.

to get though you mot,take the abs light fuse out,,no abs,you tail end will lock up,go easy on the brake in the wet and give yourself a wee bit more space from car in front,AT tyres help with wheel locking giving more grip.
