Winch at rear

At last am about to embark on winch in rear saga............
1st learn to weld (week 7 at college doing C&G in Mig welding and loving it....
Next make detailed plans...........MMnnnnn.!

Was going to cut my current warn/procomp or whatever 1/4 inch bumper and replace centre section with braced 6mm and winch mount
Then cos I had flu yesterday and felt shite was looking at Pirate....
Also seems that lots of people don't like the idea of big winch hanging off back.

So looked at the YJ and yes could make 6mm bridge off chassis and have it touching underside of floor then bolt winchmount thro floor
means  opening door for rear winch access (once a year?!!) from stress point of view would mean winch mounting stresses would be similar to mounting of front winch this I seem to like at the moment.
As you who have seen my YJ will know its chequerplated as a closed pick up so rear interior is boxed in and full of bbq fuel and air tank so only room for winch and tools now!

What do you think am I making rod for own back thingy or what.

Also cutting 6mm plate ????????????  Uses loads of discs!!! What you guys use? cheapish plasma cutter?

I've seen Landrovers with a 'letterbox' opening in the rear door for the winch and regarding cutting 6mm, I just get through lots of the thin 1mm discs - but would love a plasma cutter if I could afford one.

Yup seem to be buying multiple boxes of 10 of the 1mm thin ones, they do work but as you say need lots of them.

Always thought Plasma cutters were mega money cos I knew someone who bought one about 20 years ago, but a bit of a search and although more than loose change came up with this http://www.essexsteam.co.uk/plasma.php the reviews I've read seem to be OK with guys zapping 1" plate with out too much grief.

Also since first post have decided to do the letterbox trick on the YJs door, to winch with door closed! Just the work to do now.. don't hold yer breath!!

If the "Thunder stick" in that link, can live up to its claims? Then its a good bit of kit to have, but a good air supply is needed too. I have a 200Ltr tank Ingersol Rand Air compressor 15CFM and it is O.k for this size plasma.

only problem i see with your letter box design is unless you cut a hole in the floor the stiffer mount bolts and your rubber body mounts arent gonna play nice together on repeated hard pulls. and then im not sure how your going to mount it to the frame rails with the gas tank in the way.
but keep crackin and make it work cause itll look alot cleaner tucked out of the way than hanging of the rear bumper.

Subframe below floor will be hard mounted, welded, possibly bolted thro chassis. Steel plate will touch underside of floor and winchmount will bolt thro from there....... See what you mean about the body mounts maybe I'll cut larger holes and let the floor just sort itself out!
Fuel tank going in back but gotta make a small 5gall one to fit with Propane and air tank and now winch.

45degree rock sliders to weld to my Currie rocker guards first (easier) also to do ....... tube fenders....... Are you going with the cut 3" higher ones on yours?

sounds like a plan mate, alot of my best stuff is on the fly.
im not sure how im going todo my front fenders, but you do need to come make templates out of what i have saying its a yj kit cause the guy i got it from is a twit!

I'll be in contact soon mate, got new mega mig machine arriving soon so will have to get it dialed into me, my brain, and how its settings are different from the 3 phase college ones! you got any scrap you want me come collect??
Yeah YJ patterns are what I need for the front fenders but at the moment these are the puppies that are doing it for me http://www.genright.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=TFF4XXX (hope the link works) had an idea for trimming the hood so it don't look shit but thats for later. Got myself into a big list for the winter rebuild just like last year when ....... nothing happened!!!! Stole a march on it this autumn done the sunken lights and also got an air locker up front....... 4x4 and  a turning circle..... never had that before! Catch ya soon.
