CHEROKEE XJ HEATING
« on: December 09, 2009, 03:37:32 PM »

had very poor heating since i have had the car 4 years 1998 2.5td facelift with mk2 VM,it takes ages to get warm inside the car,in the winter its even worse, all the vents are working ok and if you tirn the heating control to cold it goes cold, but in warm it never really gets hot.

the car comes up to operating temp in no time at all, even in the winter,so surely the thermostat is ok as the car engine its self is not over heating, engine temp comes up to around 80-90c

i have noticed that my fan rotates all the time,my friend had xj mk1 and his fan did not turn at all when the engine was cold, can anyone help on this.

regards brian

the diesel is a nightmare for taking time to warm up. even modern diesels have heating elments to warm the coolant quicker so to give warm air to the cabin. if your not getting heat then you might have a blockage in the heater matrix. this will involve replaing the coolant and removing the heater pipes and flowing water through them in both directions. this should  remove any blockage. one way to check for this is to touch th heater pipes when the engine is warm, both should be hot. if not then you have a blockage

not too sure about the XJ specifically, but first thing I would check if water flows through the heater matrix,

easy job, for a basic check find the 2 hoses passing through the bulk head, disconnect and put a hose pipe on 1 pipe, water should flow relatively freely out of the other hose, if not check the valve that controls flow rate to see if it is moving its full range

The motor turns all the time unless you turn the nob that controls the distibution to 'O' -that seems to turn it off or prevents the air coming out in any case. This could be way off the mark as I've never delved behind the dash on a Jeep, but regarding the poor heating could it be that the mechanisms that open and close the various flaps are badly adjusted - I had a audi that always blew warm air out of one set of vents, the cure was to dismantle most of the dash and so I didn't bother. I've got a 2000 2.5 diesel and can get the heater to blow very toasty air,  but does take a while to heat up.

Chances are the heater is bloced - or there is an airlock in the pipes that supply the heater matrix - they run over the top of the engine.

Hose pipe into the ends of both pipes to blow it out and when putting back together make sure the pipes are full of water

My 1997 mk2 xj diesal is exactly the same , engine gets up to the correct tempreture fairly quick , but the heater remains pretty dismal....

I have disconnected my heater pipes several times , and flushed em through both ways but it certainly isn,t what you would call free flowing , so there is a blockage in there somewhere....   both metal pipes to the heater are now getting hot , which is an improvement , but i am still going to be wearing a warm coat when i venture out in the winter...  I really don,t fancy ripping the whole dash out to replace the heater core , so i am just going to have to live with it.....
