Dimple dies!!!
« on: November 17, 2009, 01:43:53 PM »

How come I can't find any of these in the UK. And yet in the US 'Dimple dies' are everywhere!

Even looked under 'Hole swage tool' 'cos we call things differently? all there is is tiny ones for rivet guns???

Fancy doing a trail rack with dimple die floor for strength, (another project!) Just cant see the justification to ship 'em in at the moment!

Any ideas???

Yup $200 seems like it for a set here/   http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/5pc-1018-Dimple-Die-Set-1-2-1-1-1-2-2-2-1-2_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2557062defQQitemZ160373812719QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools#ht_696wt_941
but they do one size ie 2and half inch for $45 so not so bad if you just want one!

Guess I might be dropping by yours again JJ! Want to go to 3" if possible for floor of rack.

Just trying to negociate Argoshield without getting wallet-f**ked by BOC at the moment!

Seen the dimple dies used on rally car cages starting at smallest going to largest looks neat.

3in? damn son! hope you dont plan on keeping to much in this said rack - everything is gonna fall out the holes. lol
yeah just pm me some details of what your wanting todo and when and you know well work it out. just know that dimples are an art and drilling all the holes takes ALOT of time, just so you can stick it in a press to dimple it, ohh yeah and you can mess it up and then its all for nothing. and you have to start from scratch or live with the screw up. lol
dontcha love fab work?

Wildwood,
Slight detour; but you mentioned Argoshield:

Go down the pub bottle argoshield route & it means you don't have to rent the cylinder etc. & can get refills as & when needed.

you get what you pay for and there are good reasons other than money that you wont find pub bottles in a real shop

I bought my own bottle for argon as I used to use BOC and it cost an arm and a leg as if I did not do much welding the rental was still being paid.  I brought the half size bottle as it menas I can now get the TIG out the front if necessary without the risk of a hernia trying to carry the bottle.  The bottle is certified for 10 years and registered to me, and will cost £17 to recertify after this period.  The refil works out about £45 ish for argon and they refill while I wait.  The bottle and refilling is done by Widget World Ltd at Blackpole, Worcester.  The bottle from memory was £125 ish to buy.

Cheers

Surely if the gas in the bottle is BOC Argoshield if its in a pub bottle or a full size Boc bottle the results are the same. Unless there is a different flow rate achieved, safety issue etc?

Nexus; cheers for the tip as I now live in Worcester & work down the road from Blackpole; I'll try widget world for supplies.

if you can afford a beer from them why are we having the chat?

Also CO2 bottle pressure is around 750 to 850 psi, were as argon is around 3200 psi also the fittings are different one is male the other female so that you cant connect the wrong regulators.  Pub bottles should be fine for Co2 as this what they are tested and certified for but I would be suprised if someone would fill them with argon as they would not be tested for this.

Back to the Original Question :icon_winkle:

Fancy doing a trail rack with dimple die floor for strength, (another project!) Just cant see the justification to ship 'em in at the moment!

Strength Vs Stiffness (OOO! er Missus!)

The Swage will not strengthen the material. The swage is making more efficient use of the material around the hole thus going some way to replacing the material taken out and not leaving you with a floppy cheese grater.

Stiffness as opposed to Strengthen.

strengthen;
To make strong or increase the strength of.

stiffen;
To make or become stiff or stiffer.

stiffness;
Synonyms: stiff, rigid, inflexible, inelastic.
These adjectives describe what is very firm and does not easily bend or give way. Stiff, the least specific, refers to what can be flexed only with difficulty.

Thank you Mr Warthog....
I shall now be building with 'rigid' in mind and definitely not 'floppy' :hysterical:

Last comment on gas!
I purchased my tested 'Pub bottle', different regulator & subsequent refills of Argoshield from Kidderminster Welding Supplies.
9 Years of welding (albeit infrequent & light duty) & all is good & at a low cost.
