Speedo rev counter loss 96xj cherry diesel
« on: December 12, 2009, 09:46:37 AM »

Stuck in market drayton tryin to get home. Lost my speedo rev counter n worst of all cruise control. Everythin else appears to work. Silly me left my manual in my garage doh! Any ideas? Is it a case of usin sat nav as my speedo to drive the 70 miles home up motorway to wolverhampton or call breakdown service to come check?
Once i'm home, anyone any ideas where to look first? I hav also noticed that my little vac pump situated by the air filter is no longer buzzing when i turn engine off. Is this linked?
Thanks all for any help u can offer

Keep smilin ....

Update from stumped jeeper

Still no speedo, tacho or cruise. Too dark to check under the car tonight. Checking the crank & vss sensors 2moz

Checked all the earths, ecm, batt connections i could get too under bonnet. Started her up and now have other symptoms. On start up, i have a clanking sound from engine, sounds as though a cylinder isn't quite firing (New glow plugs fitted several weeks ago) But as soon as all cylinders fire up, she runs smoothly but the check engine light has come on. Also, before it fired, it turned over freely but didnt start. Checked out what I could see on fuel system. All seemed ok. Gave the plunger on top of fuel filter a few plunges and it started up first time, still with an initial clank. Now will the clanking sound come from not enough fuel in one of the cylinders? Just before I finished for the night, I noticed I have a hole appear in one of my pipes. It is the rubber pipe that comes from the banjo connection on cylinder head near the EGR elbow and goes to the banjo connection on top of the fuel pump. Anyone shed any light on what this pipe is or does? Does it contain fuel? Could this be where the air is getting into the fuel system? Aarrggh .... Sounds a bit like an old batman ending with all these questions.

With all your help out there in Birty land, I'm sure I can get this ole cherry of mine running right ..... eventually .... cheers all and have a good evening ... enjoy ya X-factor or Strictly Dancing ....... ha ha

If it's the speed sensor causing the speedo etc not to work it should have tripped a code. Clanging I'm not sure about, don't pay too much attention to diesels. In case you don't know here's how to get the codes...

the clanging from a cylinder could be a popped out pushrod which is easy to fix by unbolting the rocker and putting it back in it's place when you tighten it down.

EGR is an exhaust gas recirculation system mainly to reduce the emmissions from the exhaust.

the amount of fuel in the cylinder is determined by the fuel pump and should not effect or cause sounds like you are saying.

not sure what runs through the banjo

The cracking is detonation because the diesel has defaulted to basic timing. As it has lost speedo and tacho I would say something is disrupting the sensor inputs to the PCM. The usual culprit is the crank sensor.
