FSJ Brake upgrade
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:26:51 AM »

Any experiences of upgrading FSJ brakes? Seems biggest fault at the moment is the soggy sponge that is attemptin to stop the wheels!

I can find a disc conversion on BJ's (v expensive) but not much else, was wondering if there was anything easy like the CJ using the YJ master cylinder & booster (v cheap - cheers wildwood!)?

As usual, cheers

:iagree: but in reality the brakes will be shite anyway, its a 30 yr old truck, goes with the package really but the CJ stops properly now (and before you say it, it did move this year for about 30 miles!) so was hoping to find a similiar trick for the newbie

are you sure they will be that bad? old brakes can lose efectivness for many reasons, one bad flexy pipe can ruin your braking, cheap pads can go off real quick.

plus changeing the brakes will change your insurance if you tell em and invalidate it if you don't

I will def get the bugger overhauled and serviced anyway, so maybe ya right, but CJ ins never twitched either way when i told them about the YJ swap and the rear disc conversion

Ins for the FSJ came in at £132 fully comp with a 3000 mile cap and they specifically said, without me asking, that it was covered when green laning & offroad (took out a £32 euro wide breakdown cover as well)

 :imwitstupid:

Never had a problem with the brakes on my black 'un it was 100% std on 31" tyres and could lock all four wheels in the dry.

Try blanking off the vacuum pipe to the servo and see if they're much worse, servo diaphragm may be buggered after 30 years :017:

ok, lets just in theory the brakes are fine, but still crap, what would "hydroboosting the brakes" equate to?

man alive  :icon_eek: i can answer my own question:

What the heck is hydroboost?
Hydroboost is a hydraulic brake booster that replaces your vacuum booster, it results in ~2-3x the braking pressure for the same amount of pedal pressure as vacuum operated brakes. It runs off of your power steering pump.

Seems there is a bolt on thingy for an FSJ after all  :icon_super:
