CHEROKEE DIESAL PUSHROD PROBLEM....
« on: April 11, 2010, 07:48:42 PM »

Thanks to the helpfull peeps on here i discovered my clattering 2.5 diesal vm engine was due to a pushrod popping out of position , not an uncommon problem it seems...

No problem , everybody said , just take off the rocker and pop it back into place...job done.......errr no...!

There were actually two pushrods on the same cylinder that had come adrift , one slotted into position , no problem , the other just would not sit in the correct position to line up with the rocker arm no matter how many times i tried...!    It was pretty dam cold out here in Poland , down to minus 30 , so in the end i gave up on it....

Now , i need to improve my love life , by driving over 1000 miles to meet my Russian girlfriend in Kiev , Ukraine , so the Jeep just has to be sorted.....    A polish mechanic friend of mine , did after along delay come and take a look at the beast , and told me that the hydraulic adjuster had somehow come adrift , but that it was possible to put it back into place without the head having to come off , he said he needed to get the adjuster out , but didn,t have his magnetic screwdriver with him today , he is also going to get me a new adjuster for tuesday , just in case we need it...

People i have spoken to about this have told me that it wasn,t possible for anything to go amiss down the bottom end of the pushrod , but it definatly has...!    Has anyone else had experiance of a similar problem , and can you reasure me we can sort this out without taking the head off...??   My Polish friend who has worked on these engines before seems to think its no big problem , but i am starting to get stressed now , its only 19 days before my trip to Ukraine , the hotel is booked...and a very beautifull Russian lady is waiting for me...this is a serious matter....!!!!

I am actually meeting my lady in Kiev , which is 75 miles south of Chernobyl , so i did think about visiting the place again , but then decided perhaps its not the most romantic of places to take a lady on a date....

If you are really up for a trip to Chernobyl then keep in touch , my farm is a conveniant halfway point between the UK and Kiev , so you could rest up , and do some maintenance before venturing into the potholed mess that is the Ukrainian road system....

If all goes well with my Russian lady she may well be moving into my Polish farm , so we will have a free English speaking Russian guide for a Chernobyl trip....

Now....about that pushrod....am i really fooooked...?    if i don,t get to Kiev my chances of being fooked look a bit dismal....!!!

Dam...i have just blundered into another thread on this very subject....somebody was saying you can replace the adjuster without taking the head off , just using a special tool , somebody else is saying the head does need to come off as the adjuster is held in place by a clip that is secured when the head is bolted down....??

I don,t have this special tool....and i sure don,t have time to order one , or a head gasket and all the gubbins to take the head off....my trip is in 19 days....give me some good news somebody...???

I have been asking my Polish friend for weeks to come and take a look at this Jeep...he finally did , but its left me no time to deal with any problems that might come up.....pooh...!

I believe you have the earlier engine you don't need the special tool.

Love shack awaits you!!!

My clatterer is the 2.5 vm...its in a 1997 vintage Cherokee , thats the mk2 clatterer......

Oh , so there is a chance that cinderoiler will be going to the ball...thats the best bit of news i have had since....well since i bumped into a pretty Russian called Ksusha....

I just hope they have repaired all the holes that the winter left in Ukraine...they were pretty bad last time i went , could be even worse now...

I guess it might be an idea to order a full set of these hydraulic adjusters , as there may be others on the way out...?

i had the same problem when i owned mine. I have posted a basic solution already but this is what i did.

the hydraulic lifters are held in place by a stirrup bracket which is sandwiched in place by the head. If your man can get the lifter out without removing the head then film him doing it as i would be surprised.

with the head removed the lifters are fiddly to get out due to them being surrounded by oil which holds them in place. if poor quality oil is used the roller bearing (cam side) can wear badly so if the head has to come off TBH it's worth replacing them as a set if your funds allow.

Popping the pushrods back in place can be a pain depending on the rotation of the engine. If you can get one rod into place and not the other, leave the other out and turn the engine over a small amount (don't start it) then try and refit the other push rod. It should then be easy to fit.

A simple solution to stop the rods jumping out, i welded some nuts to the rocker arm cup which allowed the rods to fit easily. The depth of the nut prevents the rods from jumping out of the rocker arm. The nuts were only held in place by two good tack welds. There will be no load on the nut so no need to go overkill with the welding.

If the head has to come off , then i am screwed , only got 19 days to my trip , not enough time to get a head gasket sorted....If this guy can,t replace the damaged adjuster without the head coming off , then my trip to Ukraine is a non starter....

i will order a new head gasket...and a set of adjusters....but i doubt i will get em in time...

Ksusha and i will be gutted if we can,t meet....but thats life....

Well...after reading the replies from people who have had the same problem with a diesal Jeep . and looking at the manual , i was rather gloomy about the prospects of my Polish friend being able to fix it , despite the fact i know he is a good mechanic , and his assurance that it was no big problem...

We got a new adjuster , and yesterday he arrived at my farm to have a poke at the Jeep...

With the aid of a magnetic probe he was able to get out of the pushrod hole the bits of the adjuster that had fallen to bits..he then took apart the new adjuster , removed the internals and then poked these bits down the pushrod hole...I am making this sound simple , but it was kinda like arranging your house furniture around by means of a long stick poked through your letterbox...

Anyway , despite the difficulties the new internals  were put in the adjuster , the rocker cover and pipes put back together...and the the Jeep fired up....it sounds perfect...!

I took the beast for a long run to check all was well , and its running just fine....The sense of relief is fantastic , this car is going to Kiev in Ukraine in 17 days time in order for me to spend nine whole days in a nice hotel with a lovely Russian woman....

Thank you to everyone who has helped with advice on this...i will bring you some Ukrainian vodka back...amd maybe if i venture to Chernobyl i will get some pics of the Jeep in front of the Chernobyl town sign...

I am aware i am probably going to have to replace all the adjusters at some point in the near future , but all i care about right now is that the oiler is going to Ukraine...!

Thanks for your good wishes my friends...not long to go now...If the old VM holds together , and i can dodge the completly insane Ukrainian drivers i will be in the arms of my lovely Ksu at Kiev rail station on the 1st may...My lady is not very good with pliers , but she can strip , rebuild and fire an ak 47 , how cool is that...!  Seems it was compulsary to serve in the Russian military to some extent , and my lady trained as a battlefield medic...part of her training was on weapons , although i think even the Russian medics don,t carry guns...??

My lady is travelling from Moscow on the train , and i am tootling in the Jeep of course , we are meeting in Ukraine because we can both travel there without a visa...! yes folks you can enjoy Ukraine for up to 90 days without any visa if you hold an EU passport....

I shall give you all a full report on my return , well , maybe not a FULL report , there could be children on this forum...???

Thanks again everybody...
