Turbo noise

Hi, I have a 2001 cherokee TD and since I,ve had it ( about a month ) the turbo has made a slight whooshing sound??? like its sucking in air through a split pipe or something, I cant see any splits any where and someone has told me they make this noise when their near the end of their life and if it goes bang it could destroy my engine!! I dont doubt when they go they can cause engine damage as they scream the nuts out of it, but is mine on its last legs is what I,d like to know? If anyone can offer any light on this or has a good turbo going cheap?

What you describe is more likely to be a split pipe opening when the turbo is boosting. The pressure increase causes the split to open, blowing air out, not sucking air in
Check the pipes between the turbo to the inlet manifold via the intercooler (does it have an intercooler
)

It does have an intercooler - but the turbo does make a noise - when its working, all depends how lod really.
But the pipe is most likely to split at the intercooler (which is in the front crossmember)

Its all good! checked the inter-cooler pipes out and found a hole half the size of a penny worn in it! caused by it sitting on the UJ knuckle of the steering control rod/arm, Took it off and sealed it with a dob of silicone and wrapped it with gaffer tape, left it in the airing cupboard for a couple of hours to set the silicone then refitted it, now as quiet as a 2.5 diesel mouse!!!
