cherokee 2.5td air conditioning compreesor
« on: April 10, 2010, 02:37:12 PM »

On first start up of the day I get a loud clatter (first thoughtit was a loose baffle in the exhaust)from somewhere close to or from the air conditioning compressor, I think it may be the compressor but as the noise only lasts 3 -10 seconds I have not pinned it down to that, the colder the weather is the longer the noise lasts. Has anybody had bother with a noisy compressor can I just disconnect the compressor at the coupling and forget about it till I get a replacement?

cheers greg

Hi Mike that's what I thought, I don't even know why we got air conditioning, I don't need it in Scotland.

Hi I still get this noise on cold start first thing in the morning like a nut in a tin can , it only last a few seconds the colder it is the longer it lasts but never more than 5-6 seconds it is then quiet for the rest of the day, could it be the self adjusting tappets draining down the oil I have in is a 10 / 40 would a thicker oil help I am due an oil change would a 20 /50 help?

thanks greg

Could be a bad hydraulic lifter. A motor flush, fresh oil of the correct grade with a genuine Chrysler filter and a can of Forte tappet treatment (Yes, something in a tin that does actually work :icon_eek:) might help.

I just had one of these ere adjusters fall to bits on my diesal 2.5 cherokee..the pushrod fell out...made a right racket...

Being told the head had to come off to replace it depressed me deeply , as i was a short time away from wanting to drive to Kiev in Ukraine to meet my Russian beauty...

Thankfully a great Polish mechanic friend managed to remove the broken bits , and put new internals in the adjuster without taking the head off...tricky , but it can be done....

The old oil burner sets off on its 1500 mile round trip in four days...fingers crossed......

Hi Wildrover I saw you topic and a couple of weeks  a go it is good to know that you managed to get it sorted and it gives me hope if the oil change etc. doesn't cure mine.
I hope you trip goes well, good luck.

Thanks for your good wishes , my old clatterer is running fine now , but the adjuster we took out was pretty well worn before it fell to bits , so i have no doubt there may be others in the future to replace...

Everyone tells me the secret is to change the oil on a regular basis , and use good quality oil.. The hydraulic adjusters , as well as the cylinder heads seem to be a weak point on the VM engine...

I hope you manage to sort yours out without too many problems....
