8274 power
« on: June 21, 2010, 09:06:16 AM »

Here's a weird one......
Got the 8274 wired up with new terminals, monster cable and all contacts are fine (NOW :icon_twisted:)

While stuck in 2 foot goop at Bawtry yesterday  I ran the cable out about 60ft and did like I did with the Milemarker hit the IN switch and let her wind me in...... cable tensioned and winch stalled......

Stuck it in gear and did winch assist..... awesome .... winch asisted me out and fast spool in time meant that I drove to keep up with the line until next stuck and then thro that......job done....

My question is?..... Shouldn't they have more power than this and be able to winch a stuck vehicle (engine running)

Or could it be that my winch is old and the motor is the old 2.5hp (I think) and the 8274 -50 has the 4 hp

The 2.5HP motor is very underpowered :icon_eek:

If you had Snatch blocked it, it may of just done it?

Mine is an old 8274 with standard internals. I run the 5.5 Bowmotor (cant fault'em) Have dragged some mighty things out with it.

Im reluctant to go up to a 6 or 6.5 with standard internals, as this was where the main shafts etc started to get fooked.

If you get a Bowmotor? I would replace the 2 terminal screws, that connect the Brush assembly, to the motor housing at some point. Mine corroded and left me with a dead winch, as the contacts were not secure due corrosion of the standard screws. Something stainless would work. I'll take a piccie if needed?

If im self recovering, i will driver assist if required. Just makes sense to aid the recovery and not put the winch under the extra pressure. With your crawler gears, im sure you could have the wheels rotating pretty close to that of the winch?

If im recovering someone, i'll snatch block it. As yet again, extends the life span of you motor and winch internals.

Thanks mate..... As I almost suspected :jpshakehead:

heard some good things about the Bowmotor, as well as seeing yours in action at Clyro..... was impressed.

What's the cost and is it a straight hassle free bolt-in. Or would a Warn 4hp from the later 50 be a better idea.
Cos as the JP mag showed its a 30min fix for about $300

Like you I am reluctant to start 'hot-rodding' the winch cos as we know some'at else will go bang.

You'll need a "Multi Splined Gear" Not expensive. Devon do'em for £20. As you have a 8274 the motor shaft is a keyed version.

A bowmotor 5.6Hp Long series is around the £155+VAT (Thats what i have) Came to about £200 with next day del.

Just out of curiosity? Did you weld a Earth bolt onto the old 2.5 motor? As not having an earth bolt, can zap the power out of the motor too. The 2 securing bolts that line up the motor to the housing were used from the factory as a way of earthing the motor from the factory for the 8274's

2.5 has earth bolt tapped into body on underside so that goes back to battery with new monster cable and then from solenoid chassis on right front (as you look at it) big earth to winch mount bolt. So earth should be good.......

This afternoon had a play with an idea based on you green oval boys........

I moved the winch a squidgin back after Kirton only about 20mm and made a difference to the (oh dear here we go again) death wobble scenario.
So today I took the shiny bling grill cover off and cut 3 of the slats down to fit the winch on the rear setting of the winch mount so now parallel with the bumper..... hard to see what I've done now winch is back (so you'll have to see at Cheapfest cos pics don't do it justice.) Anyway just been down the jetwash and for a blast and a difference to the better.....

All that is down to moving winch back just under 2 " or 45mm in Catholic.
