96 XJ 4.0 Auto - Rear Lift
« on: March 07, 2010, 07:05:42 PM »

Hi guys,

Tech issue number two  :100:

Mud tyres fitted on landrover 16" rims, rub on the bodywork.  I've already cut the arches as much as I can, so the next step is to lift the rear by a couple of inches.

From reading on here, I see you can use a couple of shackles for the leaf springs, to give a 2" lift, without having to mess around with brake lines etc.

Money is a big factor for my modifications, in that I've hardly got any  :icon_sad:  So... Where is the cheapest place I can get these shackles from, and how much do they normally cost.

Finally, is this an easy(ish) job to do?  Do I need any special tools?  Is it a case of lifting the body with a jack, thus relieving the pressure on the springs, so that they can then be un-done?

Thanks in advance,

Jon.

rear shackle replacement is fairly straight forward. drop the rear of the spring and swap over, leave the bolts loose when you refit to allow ease of alignment. then tighten them up when you have put the wheels back on and the axle stands removed.

What tyres do you have? We need to know the diameter so we can recommend minimum lift.

Got Kingpin 205 muds on:

205 R16 tyre size:

As you can see I've already taken an angle grinder to the plastic bits of the arch, but level with the plastics now is the bodywork.  Next step is also to take the mudguards off and beat the bodywork back a bit.

Thanks,

Jon.

Well...!  Finally got round to ordering the lift shackles, decided as I was paying a bit on postage that I'd get myself some coil spacers for the front as well...!  Hopefully it will call come next week some time, and I can then get cracking on fitting it all  :icon_super:

Easy enough to do, I found the spring compressors that properly hooked over the coils meant they didn't slip off. I've removed all the 'spats' from the Cherokee and trimmed the arches a fair bit... last Cherokee could run 34" swampers with 4" lift this way...

Hope this helps, Maf
