3 inch lift??
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:09:24 PM »

hi all im new here and i have some questions about my cherokee.
I have just fitted some new leaf springs to the rear and they are supposed to be 3 inches higher than standard. What is the best way to lift the front to match?
Also i have read that you might have to lower the transfer box is this right if so what is the most common way to do it?
Its a 1995 4litre auto
cheers

You can get spacers for the front springs which will give you approx 1.75", which will probably do the trick as you can expect the rears to settle down a bit. If you experience driveline vibration after lifting, then you should consider lowering the transfer case 1" using spacers between the crossmember and chassis.

aren't the grand cherokee springs longer and combined with spacers give you a better way of lifting rather than just a big spacer.

once all fitted drive the jeep and see what it feels and sounds like. if you here a grumbling and feel vibration then the transfer box will need to be dropped down by 1" to realign the rear prop-shaft and diff nose.

you might be on the limit for your suspension dampers for extension travel as well. ok for the road but will be a limiting factor off road.

std height for a cherokee is 17" front and 17.5" rear. wheel hub centre to wheel arch

ok cheers
well there is a modern ish grand cherokee up the scrappy so i will have to get those springs off before it disappears.
I did have to jack the axel up a bit to get the rear dampers on so they do seam a bit short i wonder if there is anything up the scrap yard that is long enough?
I measured from the wheel hub center to the arch and the front is 17.5" and the rear is 21" with the new rear springs on

I've got a 3.5" Rubicon express lift kit on my cherokee, part of the fitting instructions is to remove the rear sway bar. It's passed the MOT with not comments

It should fail. Most testers won't notice though.

Directly from the Mot tester's manual....

Method of inspection.  Check that an anti-roll bar is fitted to an axle on which it is standard.

Reason for rejection.  An anti-roll bar not fitted to an axle on which it is standard.

But like I said, a lot of testers won't notice.

They will definitely fail it if does not have a front anti roll bar aka sway bar, but as previously said they don't notice if it hasn't got a rear one

just take all the mountings off, never had a question about the lack of one on mine. the garage i send mine to does check the play in the disconnects.

for suspension mods and changeability have a look on naxja and pirate 4x4.

I think the MOT should fail if the brackets are there for the anti roll bar... remove them and then no prob, but as discussed most MOT testers aren't that picky...

Grand Cherokee V8 springs longer and can give lift....

Cheers Maf
